In your sights

Bowie knife on his hip, a belt full of ammo and a ‘scoped rifle held firmly whilst propped on the bars of his Triumph Thunderbird. Wonder if that sizeable pannier has a few plundered game? Run rabbit run!

Getaway

This couples rural picnic has been rudely interrupted by the snorting rampage of a bullish beast. After tickling the carbs and kicking the engine over you’d certainly need a good spanking of acceleration to make a hasty retreat. “Hang on pet, we’ve got a hedgerow to jump yet!”

Black Cat

Feline mascot looking windward on the fo’castle of this lively green Sunbeam. Pilot heaves this classic inline twin along the road proudly.

Hold On!

Delightful pen-and-ink drawings by Cat Bowman Smith used to illustrate the ‘un-education’ books by Amy Macdonald. The combination is piloted by Aunt Mattie and ably passengered by Uncle Philbert. The line work reminds me of the penmanship of Edward Ardizzone who added imagery to much loved children’s books such as The Otterbury Incident by C Day Lewis and Stig of the Dump by Clive King, among others.

Ape Circus

Joe Lemke Chimps: On a Harley Davidson Hummer motorcycle are Sammy and Susie, and in the back ground are Marvin (L) and Joe (R). Photo from the Mary Gray Frasier collection.

The 2-Stroke 125 wasn’t truly an American bike; though built in Milwaukee WI, it was actually based on the German DKW as WW2 war reparations. The BSA Bantam and Soviets MMZ Moskva were other 125cc ‘cousins’.

Sidesaddle Sally

Weekend here again! Let’s hope that some improved weather allows the wheels to roll underneath. A bobber dirt tracker through the woods or dunes would be just fine thank you very much…

IQ

Another movie Tim Robbins (Andy Dufresne) was in about the same time as the mighty Shawshank Redemption is this Walther Matthau vehicle who plays Albert Einstein in his fictional latter years at Princeton. Tim stars with Meg Ryan and hoofs around campus on a Harley Davidson Sporty.

A Clockwork Fruit

Play was so much simpler in days past: you wound your toys up and watched ’em fly around the floor. No batteries, no motor; just nicely pressed metal parts and a character sitting astride.

Leap Year

Our Bloke Guy Martin takes flight with his Smiths Triumph in 2015 over the infamous humpback Ballaugh Bridge on The Isle of Man TT.

Even more impressive is Harvey Williams catching air on his 125 BSA Bantam in 1952. Fag is lit too!

The Original Rebel

Jimmy Dean would have been 85 today. Though only starring as a surly youth in three films his iconic influence stretches over sixty years. We’ve seen all those lip curled images of him on a Triumph, and the racing driver to be in his fateful Porsche 356, so I chose this one of him gazing at a Siamese kitten enjoying the world around.

“Dream as if you’ll live forever.

Live as if you’ll die today.”

The Great Bird

Another example Louise Jennison’s Windsor & Newton daubing. This time the stoic Triumph Thunderbird in pools of watercolor.

Cobbled setting for a real-life item. Granite sets rumble under a twins noisy texture.

Airbrushed accuracy on promotional artwork. Technically accurate as a contrast to the earlier brushwork.

Watery Shadow

The Swiss Watch of motorcycles: Vincent. Here captured in delicate watercolor by an able handed artist Louise Jennison.

Stand by Me

Watching Stand by Me on the Telly. It’s s great movie from 1986 (jeez it’s  thirty years ago). Here’s a photo of some fella called Bob Brook and his new Triuumph Bonneville. The hot bike to have in ’59 the same year the coming-of-age film is set in.

Hit the road Steve!

This bottle green Chevy truck with a custom aluminum camper sitting in its long bed was once owned by Steve McQueen. Towards the end of his life he used it to go cross country and see the USA from the road.

Purchased from a migrant farmer the 1952 V6 engined 3800 was purchased from a migrant farmer from the side of the road.

Big mattress, plenty of storage and a tent-like inner ceiling it would be the perfect thing to scour the back roads and lost towns of the continent. The camper unit is called a dust-tite and was built by Harold van Hoosen.

This was up for auction this year… Unsure if it sold but the anticipated price was $600-800k.
