Four Wheels Good

…when those four are on the corners of a smasher of a sports car from the seventies. In this case the unparalleled Triumph TR6 the young sibling of earlier raceworthy greats like the TR2 or alternative cousin to the sweetlined, albeit underpowered, Spitfire. The inline 2.5l six gave oomph enough for a spirited drive around the countryside. The proportion of the square jawed body with large wheels designed by the German Karmann house gave this sportster a fresh and desirable look for any respectable driving glove-clad, tweed cap wearing ‘autophile’. Indeed the sparse dashboard provides the road-pilots cockpit; backed with wood and instrumented by Smiths.

Neunelfer

Ferdinand Alexander ‘Butzi’ Porsche (1935-2012), son of Ferry Porsche, and grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and who established the Porsche Design House passed away today in Austria. His most important creation was the perfect lines of the 911. Arguably one of the greatest cars of all time.

This was also a car that the speed-hungry Steve McQueen owned. The classic 1972 911S model. Which incidentally was sold last year for $1.25m. The sublime grey colour scheme enhances the timeless form. All aspects of it are perfection of curved lines (The Marilyn Monroe of autos?)

.

The old way of forming the visually tactile lines of a car: clay modelling: the designer himself at work.

Here Comes the Sun

Another Geordie (not a Tynesider but a George!); this time George Harrison. Growing up in Liverpool he would go to the local races, here seen atop a Triumph at the Aintree Racetrack in 1955. So he was 12 at the time, just before he discovered the guitar and joining ‘The Quarrymen’…

This may even have been the poster for this particular race meet, Saturday April 30th being in 1955. Beautiful clean graphics with golden text in mid-century font on black background.

It seems ’55 was an important year for Aintree, it was here later that year Stirling Moss won his first Grand Prix driving the powerful Mercedes Benz W196 pipping ‘El Maestro’ Juan Manuel Fangio into 2nd. Exciting Stuff! I’ll bet George Harrison was there too!

Mustang Driver

Last weekend our trip to Upstate NY was meant to be taken driving about in a Mini Cooper Convertible; true Michael Caine style! However the rental place was out of them 😦  Not to worry, they had as an alternate a Black Ford Mustang Ragtop… what could we do? I had to take it, then I could be McQueen-bound a la Bullitt careening around the streets of Manhattan and lanes of the Berkshires! Nope it wasn’t as punchy as his ’68 Fastback 390 c.i. Mustang, but I had fun on the curvy roads nonetheless!
