Pointy ear’d Legolas the wood elf from Tolkien’s Middle Earth realm was played in very fine style by the British actor Orlando Bloom. Fast with bow, swift of foot and strong of friendship he was an appropriate foil to the doughty dwarf Gimli.

Orlando went on to add the pirate blacksmith Will Turner in the as popular Pirates of the Caribbean series… To date he has been in a third of the top 15 biggest grossing films. So what does he ride? We he seems to have picked up a custom modern Bonneville with hand beat tinware, spare details and fun stance. Just needs some leathers and a lid to top it off. Fleet footed? On that Triumph he is!

Barbarella Catton the Canadian actress more commonly known as Haji, passed away at the weekend aged 67. She appeared in several Russ Meyer films, including Motorpsycho (1965), Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965), and Supervixens (1975). All classics of their genre.

Meyers satirical sexploitation film went directly against the grain of the mainstream movies of the day. A Zappa to the motion picture world you could say… Or was Zappa a Meyer of the music world?

Of course we have our early biker film, before Easy Rider, and fairly gritty in its nature. The women are buxom, the characters crude, narration camp, yet the female empowerment seeps through the stories. Haji fits the bill on all accounts. The seminal Faster, faster pussycat! Kill! Kill! Is the zenith in his career.

After watching these you can see where Quentin Tarantino gets his inspiration. . . and I do believe that’s a Triumph on the poster of Motorpsycho..

A movie poster with a violent intent. However the color touched-up still have the Triumph riders in clean brown leather and pink. The bikes are rendered quite brightly too. Looks more like a jaunt into the countryside; I’m sure the biker gang must show up at some point and cause disruption to this bucolic Californian scene…
Here’s a studio shot of Anne Neyland and Steve Terrill who star as the main protagonists gang moll Terry and Randy.
They hare around the dusty Golden State on British iron like there’s no tomorrow, talk ‘sickle lingo, dodge the cops and drag-strip race for kicks. The studio riding shots with projected moving roadway are fun and the writing much to be desired but for a bit of B-Movie antics…

Watch it here:

….the need for speed. Our Tommy Cruise getting his prop Thruxton up to reasonable speed on a closed set in London’s Mall for an upcoming flick, “All you need is kill”. A graphic novel brought to life.

The story is Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s written and Yoshitoshi ABe’ illustrated SciFi story very much like a Philip K. Dick version of Groundhog Day.

Matchless! Instead of the usual Triumph Moto to be seen on here’s our actor-fella Guy Pearce with a classic G80.
He’s been a soap actor, amnesiac, time traveller, an abdicated king and a drag queen. Versatile; like the single 500cc. It was raced, scrambled, toured, combined, and hacked… All good two wheeled malarkey! It’s a shame the 60 odd year old company went under.

Rufus T. Firefly: “I’m in a hurry! To the House of Representatives! Ride like fury! If you run out of gas, get ethyl. If Ethel runs out, get Mabel! Now step on it!”

The Freedonia ruler in ‘Duck Soup’ along with the small kingdoms agent provocateurs Pinky and Chicolini use a ’26 Harley Davidson JS outfit to get about from escapade to escapade. These three are of course Groucho, Chico and Harpo – as well as straight man Zeppo. The silent one taking the reins of this ride.

“Hello, I must be going, I cannot stay,
I came to say, I must be going.
I’m glad I came, but just the same,
I must be going.”

It was of course Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider that provides a visual cusp of a counter-culture youth between the free-lovin’ sixties and the ‘back down with a thud’ hangover of the seventies. Well this here is a chopped Turnip left to fade under a moth eaten canvas tarp in some back pasture barn. The communes fled decades ago and the pot smokers moved out west…
“Needs some T.L.C.” Darn tootin’ it does! But boy if you squint hard enough- well, just close your eyes and plain imagine, you can nearly see a chromed out beast resplendent with Union Flag petrol tank. The journey this time? A couple of weary biker vagabonds heading eastward from Newquay along the A303 across the Salisbury Plains, stopping off at Stonehenge aiming for the seafront of Brighton before meeting an untimely demise on the A23 by a swerving white Ford Transit driven recklessly by a pair of Cockney chavs…

“You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I can’t understand what’s gone wrong with it.” George Hanson 1969

And you’d better believe it! At last! What seems by first impressions to be a proper film interpretation of Ol’ Stoney Face himself. None other than Judge Dredd. (this has got NOTHING to do with the Stallone debacle from twenty years ago; that must vanish into movie limbo). Karl Urban plays the lawman with a tough gruffness befitting the surly character created nearly 35 years ago by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. The Lawmaster bike looks correct befitting these law enforcers of Mega City One.

A comment from Mr Bill Ferry, Carlisle UK yesterday in regards to the image of the fine example of a late sixties Bonneville, considered by many to be the best of the bunch, I noted that if that was the 60’s icon Audrey Hepburn of motorcycles then my early 70’s Bonnie could be another actress of that latter decade: Charlotte Rampling. the demure, mysterious lady of such movies as The Night Porter and Farewell my lovely among others.

Yes, yes, Lynn Redgrave was the titular protagonist in that classic British drama film from the late sixties but Charlotte was the flat mate Meredith in that movie which became a launching point for her career. But, hey! Geordie Biker meets Georgy Girl!
“Hey there, Georgy girl
Swingin’ down the street so fancy-free…”

Young whippersnapper actor Shia Labeouf adds excitement to his movie star life with a 900cc Thruxton.

On screen he has been seen taking the great Indiana Jones as pillion passenger in the last Harrison Ford epic. I think that bike was a dolled-up latter-day HD; well he’s trying to look tha part in a Marlon Brando ‘Wild One’ manner… shoulda been a Triumph though!

Action Man Diver Driver Fighter Blighter Jason Statham is here astride a late 60’s Trump. This bike is actually for sale on Ebay in Australia $13,000 and it’s yours to either roam the Outback or ship to any worldwide destination. It was made for his latest film ‘Killer Elite’ also starring Robert DeNiro and Clive Owen, a story based on a novel by True-Life Action Man Adventurer and Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Nevertheless this is a nice moto for some great action sequences no doubt.

Our Scottish pal Ewan McGregor looks on at some vintage racing Triumph at Brooklands. Look at the angle of those bars, a speed set-up this surely is! Meanwhile the Teutuls look on in somewhat due respect; it ain’t a chopper boys, but it’s go like a hare bein’ chased by a hound! More about Ewan in future posts, being a bike nut ‘n’ all.

The Brooklands Museum, was the very first banked track course. Designed purely for the attainment of speed on the burgeoning car and bikes being built and adapted to go fast at the turn of the 20th Century. It’s crumbling slopes now host gatherings of vintage transport as well as a great collection of aircraft; including one of the retired BOAC Concorde ` indeed Brooklands can be considered a major part of the Concorde story.

One film where the bikers lifestyle plays a part is the classic Quadrophenia. The Who soundtracked, Phil Daniels starred story of mods versus rockers. An antagonistic rowdy London crowd: on one side the anorak wearing, Vespa and Lambaretta riding guys and gals; the other a rough, oily leather clad gang of Triumph and Beeza rortin’ lads and lass rockers.
Here a moped mod gets gunned down on the A3 by a swarm of British iron…
