The one and only Billy Shears

image

Reuse, recycle, replay.
Remember slipping out the delicate disc of vinyl from its sleeve. Spinning it over edge to edge gazing at the shimmering groove. Popping side 1 onto the turntable and clicking the arm to begin the turntable and gently placing the needle down. It was a sacred sequence when listening to your favorite LP’s. Mine was Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The disc brake as table is inspired. But I’d lay a velvet bed down first.

David Bowie is

image

We went to the Bowie exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art today. A wonderful combination of Sound & Vision. His fashion, art, inspiration all wrapped up with his music and range of persona; be it Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom, or Aladdin Sane.

Imagine…

December 8th is Jim Morrison’s birthday, but more poignantly was the date John Lennon was shot in New York City 34 years ago.

He was of course a great bicycle rider. From Liverpool to NYC…
“As a kid, I had a dream – I wanted to own my own bicycle. When I got the bicycle, I must have been the happiest boy in Liverpool, maybe in the world. I lived for that bike. Most kids left their bikes in the backyard at night. Not me. I insisted on taking mine indoors and the first night I even kept it in my bed.”

Ode tae a motorcycle…. An’ its lass!

image

There was a lass, and she was fair,
At kirk or market to be seen;
When a’ our fairest maids were met,
The fairest maid was bonie Jean.

And aye she wrought her mammie’s wark,
And aye she sang sae merrilie;
The blythest bird upon the bush
Had ne’er a lighter heart than she.

But hawks will rob the tender joys
That bless the little lintwhite’s nest;
And frost will blight the fairest flowers,
And love will break the soundest rest.

Young Robie was the brawest lad,
The flower and pride of a’ the glen;
And he had owsen, sheep, and kye,
And wanton naigies nine or ten.

He gaed wi’ Jeanie to the tryste,
He danc’d wi’ Jeanie on the down;
And, lang ere witless Jeanie wist,
Her heart was tint, her peace was stown!

As in the bosom of the stream,
The moon-beam dwells at dewy e’en;
So trembling, pure, was tender love
Within the breast of bonie Jean.

And now she works her mammie’s wark,
And aye she sighs wi’ care and pain;
Yet wist na what her ail might be,
Or what wad make her weel again.

But did na Jeanie’s heart loup light,
And didna joy blink in her e’e,
As Robie tauld a tale o’ love
Ae e’ening on the lily lea?

The sun was sinking in the west,
The birds sang sweet in ilka grove;
His cheek to hers he fondly laid,
And whisper’d thus his tale o’ love:

“O Jeanie fair, I lo’e thee dear;
O canst thou think to fancy me,
Or wilt thou leave thy mammie’s cot,
And learn to tent the farms wi’ me?

“At barn or byre thou shalt na drudge,
Or naething else to trouble thee;
But stray amang the heather-bells,
And tent the waving corn wi’ me.”

Now what could artless Jeanie do?
She had nae will to say him na:
At length she blush’d a sweet consent,
And love was aye between them twa.

Motorcycle – Tico & the Triumphs: http://youtu.be/S-4d3NxqrZU

Paul Simon, who is 73 today wrote this catchy tune in ’61 with the band Tico & the Triumphs. Love the film clip that goes with it.

Robert Zimmerman

image

He grew up near Duluth MN and headed out on the road picking up songs and singin’ heading out to New York. This weekend we’re staying on the North Shore of Lake Superior where the northern stretches of HWY61 hugs the coastline.

Must come back to ride it on a motorcycle. Wearing a t-shirt like Dylan.

“The roads are alive with…”

image

A magical note from the twin cylinder when revs rise from a lumpy burble to a high raspy whirr. When the engine is purring and the lanes smooth and clear it’s a beautiful song. A symphony of orchestrated parts moving in unison.

The other Rob Williams; Robbie that is; once Take That lead singer who went on to a terrifically successful solo career. Tries the ‘Cool’ look further with an off road Triumph a LA McQueen.

Here Comes the Sun

image

On this day in 1969 the Fab Four walked out of one of their final recording sessions together at the eponymous studio on Abbey Road and strolled across a zebra crossing into history. A great album full of depth in their music – however separate strengths were evolving to maturity.

image

Each in synchronized stride, with Paul out of step with a bare right foot forward… It is arguably one if the most recognized album covers in history…. The music ain’t that bad either. The crisp notes of Harrison’s plucking opening side two are truly sublime.

…Paint it Black

image

As Mick sang and Keith picked and so the world goes on… I saw this motolady hefting this Honda vee twin through the midday traffic along Roosevelt. Black upon black with mirrored shades and a cyclops eyelash up front. She looked intent.

“I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes”

From the seminal ‘Stones album Aftermath in ’66.

When the Boat comes in

image

Our annual big show outing this week saw a pair of theatergoers attend the second evening of Stings new musical on its pre-Broadway performance. The Last Ship is about the failing ship industry of the NorthEast in the seventies. A true geordie story reflecting the other manufacturing losses in England at the time; such as the motorcycle companies.
An aged image from early Police days has Gordon with some admirer as he sits on a Yamaha. Apparently this is a teenage Gwen Stefani who’s father was a Yamaha US exec.
Other two wheeled adventures from Mr Sumner is of course his Brighton hotel doorman Ace Face and cool guy in Quadrophenia.

Sing!

Music Motorcycle: it looks like Dick and his pillion pal Dee Dee are having way too much ridin’ fun on their Bonnie whilst crooning a merry tune. Dick St John and Dee Dee Sperling was this singing songwriting duo holding court through the sixties in California.

Brother Maynards sacred relic

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, “Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals … Now did the Lord say, “First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.”

Destination today: Antioch IL. The route taken was a very pleasant Lake County backroad called Old McHenry. Rolling horse country with spring blooming hedgerows and the far off scent of spring cut grass. Beyond that Fairfield Road aims northward to the destination. A roadside cafe offered the usual breakfast fare, I had pancakes with a side of sausage links, washed down with fresh coffee on demand. We sat outside in the warm sun with classic Johnny Cash tunes blaring over the tannoy.

The quote above is of course taken from Month Pythons Holy Grail. Religious devastating relic used against the killer rabbit of Caerbannog…
