Need a light?

“Over There! The week ahead is just around the corner!” Here’s 20’s light entertainer Leslie Henson pointing the way with wife Madge Saunders acting as driver. Outfit is a late teens Douglas.

A Short Life of Trouble

“First of all, Michael is very quiet, but he’s a visual man. And he and I would look at the same thing. We wouldn’t even have to talk to each other, just look. Incredible pleasure would build up. Secondly, we camped and so we were outdoors all the time. Riding across the country on a motorcycle in ’61-’62 is a great adventure. Cops would pull up to us, and they’d say, “Hey, where are you going? What can we do for you?” People gave us food. People told us stories.” Marcia Tucker

Here’s a timeless image of a young adventure prone gal in the early sixties raveling the country as an impoverished art student. The bike is a BSA A10. She went on to become a renowned art critic & historian, curator, and of course motorcyclist.

Her Biography.

Percival’s steed

In the 1969 Belgian Grand Prix, on the Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in the Ardennes, Tait was riding Triumph’s entry for the 500cc race – a version of the Triumph Daytona developed by Doug Hele. Percy travelled with the mechanics Arthur Jakeman and Jack Shemans in an old Ford Transit van, in which the three of them also had to sleep.

Percy led the world champion Giacomo Agostini for three laps to finish second to the MV Agusta at an average speed of 116 mph.

The British Rouge Sheep Society, Knighton Flock

Triumph racing team member, chief test rider and all-round motorcycle guru: Percy Tait. Riding twins and triples at Grand Prix, The TT, Bol d’Or, NW200 and a million miles of road testing in between. This photo is taken during a one thousand mile endurance race in the sixties on s production bike.

In latter years he has become a show winning sheep breeder.

Ape Circus

Joe Lemke Chimps: On a Harley Davidson Hummer motorcycle are Sammy and Susie, and in the back ground are Marvin (L) and Joe (R). Photo from the Mary Gray Frasier collection.

The 2-Stroke 125 wasn’t truly an American bike; though built in Milwaukee WI, it was actually based on the German DKW as WW2 war reparations. The BSA Bantam and Soviets MMZ Moskva were other 125cc ‘cousins’.

The Mighty Mini

Race Day. Pack the car we’re off to the track. Well if your car is a classic mini you’d better make sure your Moto is a lightweight one: here they’re toting a Triumph Cub in the boot door. As needs demand!

Did I ever tell you I passed my driving test in a Mini?

#pledgeforparity

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and what no better way to celebrate it on GeordieBiker than to have a 3×3 grid of Triumph totin’ gals. Stemming from early 20th C socialist ideals it was a big highlighting of working women’s rights as well as voting rights in the suffrage movement. One century on and we’re still discussing equality in wages.

Airing-out

Dusted the cobwebs off, wiped down the old gal and took ‘er out for a quick spin. Well, to get a gas top up. Looking spiffy in front of this Evanston coach house. Looking forward to spring rides into the North Illinois and Wisconsin hinterland.

Nose Art

Thinking of clear spring days for those early season rides. Just need a glamour gal sitting on a bomb to complete the scene.

Where the Streets Have No Name

Joshua Tree National Monument- quite a lovely road through the desert surrounded by Henry Moore-like rock formations and the sentinel Yucca that give the park its name.

Injun

1800cc motor – ample sized vee twin lump lets the bike stroll along at a good clip even two-up. Some highway miles, town bumbling and mountain ascents were all taken with great aplomb.

A Sine Curve

Heading north along the Wisconsin shoreline of Lake Michigan you’ll end up in the narrowing peninsula of Door County. A Midwestern backwater of the northwoods with freshwater on your port and starboard. Highway 42 dodders along in a lazy meander through the trees which from the look at these images can be enjoyed any time of year. Autumn is of course the best.

My recommendation? Don’t order the Fish Boil!

The Road

The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway. Also known on the maps as NYS 97. Following the meandering state line between New York and Pennsylvania with a few winding sections overlooking the Delaware River for 70 miles.

Fall would be a good time to visit!

The Original Rebel

Jimmy Dean would have been 85 today. Though only starring as a surly youth in three films his iconic influence stretches over sixty years. We’ve seen all those lip curled images of him on a Triumph, and the racing driver to be in his fateful Porsche 356, so I chose this one of him gazing at a Siamese kitten enjoying the world around.

“Dream as if you’ll live forever.

Live as if you’ll die today.”

Happy Birthday Pa!

A father is someone who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and encourages you to try again.
