Headstand Trials

Balance- trials champion, stunt rider, motorcycle hall of fame inductee. Debbie Evans rode as she learned to walk has impeccable two-wheel control. As well as the fine technical abilities of a trials competitor she could handle fast bikes as a Hollywood stuntwoman making the movie Moto heroines appear superhuman.

She can defy gravity with ballet-like poise.

Triumph TT tank stand at speed. Control!

Triumph Tiger through fire. Blazing effort!

True ambassador to the sport!

The Tail of a …

A woodland Sprite in its natural surroundings.  A damp day on the Talmag Trial glimmers off this Vincent Comet. It makes my Cub look like a common toerag.
Girdraulic fork at the front end and a hardtail rear. Phil’s box spine frame acts as the fuel tank for a narrow profile. It’s a nice looking greenlane tool.

Interested?

December 1st and Yule is approaching so I’ll look for some seasonal items to post. This late forties ad promoting models that won trials competition should suffice for now.

Water found on Mars

Just been to see a great film: The Martian starring Matt Damon in the titular role also known as Mark Watney. Directed by Ridley Scott and based on a marvelous book by Andy Wier it tells the survival difficulties of an astronaut stranded on Mars in a fictional, though truly believable mission to the red planet. Two Thumbs Up! Go see it!

In other news: Jason Bourne can ride a mean motorcycle…

Whoop De Doos

Our zig-zag sweltered pal is 65 today. Yup Good Ol’ Chuck Brown can claim Medicaid. And seeing that it’s October we can recall his time as a motocrosser complete with pumpkin helmet.

His little scrappy #13 worked its way around the course in slow but sure fashion to claim victory.

Snoopy and peppermint Patty were in fine competition, unknowing that Charlie B would chunter along to win.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it (part 2)

Another pipe with a different bend fits much better.

It’ll give the bike a nice trials line.

The Fourth of July

The Star Spangled Banner: a strong symbol to many and flown proudly on this day.

I’m wearing my #278 ISDT tee which was Steve McQueens race number in the 1964 International Six Day Trials Where he bore the flag for the U.S. Team. In the parade through East Germany’s Erfurt he held Old Glory in what he considered one of his proudest moments. Bud & Dave Ekins, John Steen and Cliff Coleman marched with him.

Eat Your Greens

A British Racing Green color scheme looks like the way to go… Silver mudguards, blackened frame and a verdant tank.

It fits with the grassy slopes the tires grip to ascend and descend…

Golden logo glimmers in the sunlight…

Some go for the white fenders. Here this leading link fork has a Greeves air to the proceedings.

Green frame a little too much.

This older fixed frame is a nice balance.

The Weakest Link…

image

Chain slung over the new whopping sprocket. All 66 teeth on it. To ensure it wouldn’t rub against the hefty trials tire some engine realignment was also accomplished. Just need 3 new high strength  3/8″ engine to frame bolts. The rear brake pedal lever was also given a little more of an s-bend.

Green Lane

image

Big boots with thick socks and tucked in trousers. This rider is serious to cajole his Cub over some moorland path, mown to a close nap by a flock of sheep no doubt. With winter clutches upon us in the Midwest today (windchills minus 20 Fahrenheit today) this images gives me a taste of a future day out as the weather improves in spring.

How do you like them apples?

image

Dick Sutton’s Cheney framed Triumph as it currently looks. There are very particular details noted for off-road use: inboard pipes, high muffler, rearset pegs, easy access to ignition innards, alloy ‘tins’, thick seat, & Eric Cheney fettled suspension. The green frame and raw tank look stunning.

Here it was back in the day. ’67 Poland where a bronze medal was attained.

Back Wheel

image

There are several variations for setting up a trials rear wheel. It includes the axle adjustment, brake arm pivot, brake rod or cable, chain tensioning, wheel alignment, chain guarding. Snail cams seem like the way to go for easy adjustability, a thin aluminum guard plate to keep the oily chain off the soft wide knobbly tire, and an underside roller/block pushing up with spring action to eliminate slack.

Quartermaster

image

Four square: as the project heads into the final laps I need to get my head into its appearance. So I’m reviewing various examples of trials set up Cubs. This one has the footpeg and rear brake positioning necessary for the slow and deliberate riding: placement further back to allow a standing stance on the ‘pegs giving correct weight distribution. The kick start is also a folding bent crank to swing past these rear placed pegs. The high-mount exhaust and small ‘seat perch’ add further neat details to the proceedings. I won’t have this alloy tank, using the typical Cub tank of the period. It is a nifty looking machine!

Of Rod and Reel

image

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.”
                      Norman Maclean

Watching a trials moto negotiate a wet stream reminds me of a fly fisherman reading the waters of a trout plump river. A tremendous book utilizing a thread of the anglers life connecting a man and his brothers story growing up in the cool tree lined canyons of Montana. It is Maclean’s ‘A river runs through it’. A quick read but worth savoring its exquisite language that rolls softly off the page.
