Promotion shot for the new electric start T140…
F1 seventies playboy racer James Hunt sits pillion to singer David Essex on a 1980 Triumph Bonneville 750. That year Essex starred in the motorcycle racing film Silver Dream Racer; and the soundtrack song “Silver Dream Machine” was a Top 3 hit in the UK Singles Chart. Being a keen motorcyclist, he waived his fee for the then-new 1980 electric start Triumph Bonneville he had contracted to advertise on behalf of the struggling Triumph motorcycle workers’ co-operative. He still owns that motorcycle.
It didn’t fare too well at the theaters with a 5.3/10 on IMDB. But fun was had my all during filming.
Here he is with Suzuki maestro Barry Sheene, also pal of James Hunt: I bet there was partying which included rock & roll back in those days!

A latter-day Bonneville advert utilizes a time-worn approach for marketing to men: a young scantily clad lass draped over the latest and greatest. Well it ain’t new and is practically identical with the timeless Norton spreads of yesteryear.
Actually, growing up the black Norton commando was my favorite bike. A perfect looking machine; indeed Uncomplicated Sophistication…
We just need the great Leonard Rossitter in his slimy lounge character to sidle in.

Fabulous day in the saddle taking the Bonnie’s around to Michigan. An early start saw a quiet Riute 12 with naught but the shadows playing across the road ahead.
This quicksilver toned Porsche Spyder stopped us in our tracks. A race-spec engine growled as the owner sped off from the seasonal grocery store it was parked near.

Also included in the ride was a short drop.-in to the amiable Bob Goodpaster at Expert Motorcycle Works in Hobart Indiana. A glorious racing 650cc Norton sat in the front showroom floor. A serious track iron that sees unobstructed chequered flags across the country at vintage racing meets.

Got the bike ready for a sunny jaunt tomorrow into Michigan. Memorial Day weekend ahead and the morn is meant to be a sunny day. On the road by 7 so the highway will be lightly trafficked. I’ve put in new clutch springs and set screws to tighten up the plates.

Custom Colors for an end of week reveille and a Triumph Bonneville daubed in a gaudy paint scheme. The surly chick at the controls looks a bit too cool for school or perhaps just knows she has a nifty ride. It’s a little too circus for some but the stance looks set for a great road going Moto.
Here’s the riders blog:

Yup, he’s the other Geordie Biker. Our Mr Clooney turned 54 today. Likes his motos too! His cool demeanor makes him a favorite with moviegoing fans. He makes gray look good, well we’re all heading that way at some point.

May has well and truly dug it’s teeth into spring! The weather is simply perfect for riding. 70’s with hints of cool air off the lake under clear blue skies. Back roads up through Lake County with trees tinged in fresh green leaf shoots. You can smell growth as the back roads lanes skirt the oak woodland. Emily’s Pancake House in Zion for egg skillets filled grumbling bellies. A grand few miles under the rubber.

Boots ‘n’ Denim. Classy smokin’ tattoo’d cafe chick looking mean enough to kick a period Bonnie into life and haul it down the road.

Doll Face: someone’s idea of fun. Propping an articulated figure onto scale model Triumph Bonneville. Shades of Marwencol, the model town fabricated by Mark Hogancamp (look up the documentary on Netflix). This acrylic lass is called Tamara Cool Girl Harley. She has leathers too.

…not that there’s anything wrong with it…

Artist James Neil Hollinsworth has captured a fine silhouette portrait of a latter model T100 Bonneville. Mango backdrop and tangerine tank. Sunny disposition needed to get the most from this bike.

Quick outing northward to one of the finer Mexican restaurants in Highwood. They do a mean burrito meal. Good side of fried beans and rice with the usual red or green chile sauce to add zip. Washed down with a fresh glass of horchata.

Oh, and the bikes ran good too…

Her Triumph
I did the dragon’s will until you came
Because I had fancied love a casual
Improvisation, or a settled game
That followed if I let the kerchief fall:
Those deeds were best that gave the minute wings
And heavenly music if they gave it wit;
And then you stood among the dragon-rings.
I mocked, being crazy, but you mastered it
And broke the chain and set my ankles free,
Saint George or else a pagan Perseus;
And now we stare astonished at the sea,
And a miraculous strange bird shrieks at us.

The weather was perfect for an April ride to sweep the cobwebs out. A jaunt up north along quiet roads (folk are Eastering or Passovering). Late winter trees with hints of budding leaves, the odd swath of cobalt flowering squill, an azure Lake with cooling draughts of air up the ravines. Not bad, nit bad at all. Bonnie is running good too.

Wolverine looking dour with stogie clenched in teeth. Bonnie is the ride if choice. Perfect ink line work in this black & white illustration.

Here is the Hinckley commemorative Bonnie called the T214 after the Allen record breaker. Color as the streamlined Lone Star streak as noted yesterday. Nice looking machine. Only 1000 to be made.
