“I learned that life is a long and difficult road, but you have to keep going, or you’ll fall by the wayside.” Steve McQueen March 24 1930 – Nov 7 1980

Percival’s steed
In the 1969 Belgian Grand Prix, on the Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in the Ardennes, Tait was riding Triumph’s entry for the 500cc race – a version of the Triumph Daytona developed by Doug Hele. Percy travelled with the mechanics Arthur Jakeman and Jack Shemans in an old Ford Transit van, in which the three of them also had to sleep.
Percy led the world champion Giacomo Agostini for three laps to finish second to the MV Agusta at an average speed of 116 mph.

March 8th is International Women’s Day, and what no better way to celebrate it on GeordieBiker than to have a 3×3 grid of Triumph totin’ gals. Stemming from early 20th C socialist ideals it was a big highlighting of working women’s rights as well as voting rights in the suffrage movement. One century on and we’re still discussing equality in wages.

And the Oscar goes to… Triumph!
The British bike has been used in numerous films over the ages from the fifties, sixties and eighties: Marlon Brando in The Wild One, Steve McQueen in The Great Escape, to Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman. Latter day films include Carrie Ann Moss as Trinity (appropriately riding a Speed Triple) in The Matrix, Glen Hansard in Once, and last years Jurassic World with Chris Pratt roughing it on a Scrambler.

Thinking of clear spring days for those early season rides. Just need a glamour gal sitting on a bomb to complete the scene.

Thunder Bird
After hoofing it around on the Indian I’m investigating what classic tourer Triumph has to offer. Their 1700 Thunderbird LT is a close match. It’s 270 degree timed parallel twin must give a v-twin sounding thump. Floor boards for rider and pillion alike, tall windscreen, leather bags and var nigh 100 ponies on tap.

We don’t need no education…
Pink Floyd’s immortal words: another brick in a wall. Before the pasted billboards advertisements were directly painted onto the brickwork of buildings. Spalling chips add to a weatherbeaten appearance, a powerful message scripted across the running bond.
P.S.
It has been pointed out that this is a 2-Stroke such as a Jawa. Or it could be the German TWN Triumph… So kids; if you’re asked to paint an advertising mural, get your imagery correct!

Drummer Boy
Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham is considered to be the greatest rock ‘n’ roll percussionist of all time. Where Page gave color to their music and Plant texture; Bonzo was the heartbeat. Pulsating longship oarsmen rhythm in The Immigrant Song or the progressive Kashmir, they all were founded on the granite of his skills on his Ludwigs. Here he is in a suburban garden on his Triumph Chopper a la Captain America.

Leather Tuscadero played by Suzi Quatro, was the younger punk sister of Fonzies on again off again gal Punkie. Suzi was also a pioneering woman rocker in the seventies helped with her growling vocals, big bass slapping and one piece race leather outfits. In her mid sixties she’s still belting out her hits.
