Ebay win! A box arrived at work today with six of these toy motorcycles neatly wrapped up in tissue and bubble-wrap. A great deal at $15 for all of them; four of which are the much sought after Britain’s from my youth. A couple of repeats; one of which I will revise as an AA bike in yellow. A bonus was a Kawasaki KZ1000R (the Ebay listing only had five bikes!); the square fairing’d grey superbike a precursor to the big liter naked streetbikes of the eighties and nineties. Also included was a Triumph racing bike, a Honda, Norton and a BMW. The collection grows. Still trying to nab the Speedway bikes though…
Sunny Skies
Dog in a Chair
A simply drawn animated movie from 2009 based on J.R. Ackerly’s memoir from the fifties “My Dog Tulip”. Here is the author and narrator of the story driving Tulip, an alsatian, and his sister Nancy in his combination. Christopher Plummer narrates (he’s nominated for his supporting role as Hal, Ewan McGregor’s characters father in Beginners); Lynn Redgrave is the sister. (her last role before her death in 2009 – she was nominated for an Academy Award in ’66 for the title role of Georgy Girl)
I’d like to thank…
Mag McQueen
This months edition of Motorcyclist was waiting for me in the mail slot… On the cover none other than Triumphs limited model run of their T100 McQueen special. Only 1100 of these will be built: resplendent in black trim wheels, olive drab tank and plush ‘ISDT ready’ single seat. Border fences to jump anyone?
raindrops keep fallin’ on my head…
Robin Rides
Passing a dedicated owner of this late model Triumph Speedmaster, my father couldn’t help hi’self and ask to sit on it and pose. Looking the part in his leather jacket the ‘bee-loud’ colour scheme certainly looks spiffy. The owner continued his care and attention as Robin moved along. The owner should splash a puddle of oil on the ground under the bike for a little authentic brit-iron character!
Tango’d Triumph
The Bonnie is nearing springtime riding completion: tank installed, a bit o’ gasoline, kicked ‘er over and after a few coughs and splutters she roars to life. A little rough after a winter lay-up but a heartbeat nonetheless! Some fine tuning and engine tuning then the jobs a gud un… Only problem was over tightening a new oil pressure switch and cracked its threaded insert in the timing cover “damn, damn and blast it!”
Automobile Association Combi
A tiny three wheeled combination in yellow and black. This midget amongst small things has been sitting waiting to be painted and assembled (all three pieces of it!) Well I finally got around to it with as delicate a hand as I could muster. This is of course a miniature of the AA’s BSA sidecar outfit used in the forties and fifties to aid broken down vehicles. Probably the very same model my Grandfather rode whilst an officer in the Association. Indeed it was his experience with traffic and vehicles that directed him to the Military Police in WWII.
George of Africa
Another superb photo of my grandad during his service for the Military Police in WWII. With the “La Figaro” bar or cafe in the background there is a good chance this is Alexandria in Egypt where he was stationed.
Hell’s Grannies
This is a frightened city. Over these houses, over these streets hangs a pall of fear. Fear of a new kind of violence which is terrorizing the city. Yes, gangs of old ladies attacking defenceless fit young men.
What are they in it for, these old hoodlums, these layabouts in lace?
Classic sketch from the Monty Python gang. The roaring about on Beezers in one scene is great stuff!
pretty, pretty, pretty good
The Flying Haggis
Steve ‘Hizzy’ Hislop 1962-2003
To celebrate this Scottish evening of haggis, tatties and neeps, washed down of course by whisky, we’ll take time to celebrate the racing career of a truly fine Scottish rider. It is of course the 25th of January Robbie Burns Night (my birthday too!).

Hailing from Hawick (pr. Hoyk) in the Borders of Scotland, he went on to win several and notable races on the Isle of Man as well as in the British Superbike Series. His most famous victory came in 1992 in the Senior TT Mountain course where, upon a rotary Norton, he pipped the great Carl Fogarty at the post, Carl going hell for leather even set a lap record that sat for years. This race is considered one of the greatest of the TT’s history.
…A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an’ a’ that;
But an honest man’s abon his might,
Gude faith, he maunna fa’ that!
For a’ that, an’ a’ that,
Their dignities an’ a’ that;
The pith o’ sense, an’ pride o’ worth,
Are higher rank than a’ that…
He Is The Greatest!
Today is the 70th birthday of Mohammed Ali: The Greatest. A search for him riding a motorcycle finds this lone shot with him atop a somewhat diminutive moto. He still keeps his cool though.

In fact it was two wheels that started his journey to icon-hood. At age 12 he wanted to “whup” a bicycle thief; the police told him he should learn to box first. The rest is legend!

Another great moment in boxing history is his early bout with Our ‘Enery, Sir Henry Cooper 1934-2011, in 1963. Although the fight was suspended due to a cut on Henry’s eye, in the fourth round Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, was knocked to the canvas with a clout from ‘Enery’s ‘Ammer.
Pretty in P!nk
The singer Pink loves her Triumph Bonneville; seen frequently haring around the LA boulevards duckin & diving from paparazzi. Alecia Beth Moore, as she is also known as, takes the biker look somewhat seriously; engineer boots, open-face with nannini goggles; though a nice leather jacket and at least a pair of gloves is recommended!
