A Trump Card has been played

At the Triumph new model launch this evening under a snow bleaching sky I saw the outstanding design detail that has gone into these machines. The Thruxton R was truly sublime. I want one! It fits me perfectly with exactly the same riding geometry as my ’72 Bonneville.

The Motorcycle Affair (a two-wheeled espionage caper)

image

The latest redux is the classic spy duo Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin.  Starring John Cavell and Arme Hammer in the respective roles. It looks like a Triumph is used to good effect by one of the protagonist’s.  It turns out to be a beautifully made Metisse.

The Grey bodywork and chrome frame along with knobby tires are perfect. High and wide dirt bike bars with high exhaust pipes top it off.

United Network Command for Law and Enforcement aka U.N.C.L.E. was one of my favorite shows growing up.

McCallum and Vaughn were perfect in their roles.

Hit the road Steve!

This bottle green Chevy truck with a custom aluminum camper sitting in its long bed was once owned by Steve McQueen. Towards the end of his life he used it to go cross country and see the USA from the road.

Purchased from a migrant farmer the 1952 V6 engined 3800 was purchased from a migrant farmer from the side of the road.

Big mattress, plenty of storage and a tent-like inner ceiling it would be the perfect thing to scour the back roads and lost towns of the continent. The camper unit is called a dust-tite and was built by Harold van Hoosen.

This was up for auction this year… Unsure if it sold but the anticipated price was $600-800k.

Good Memories

About a year ago my wife and I were planning our great trip to the west coast. Riding two-up around and beyond the hilly streets of San Fransisco was one of the highlights. Not quite Steve & Jaqueline taking a break from filming Bullitt but close!

Such a powerful image to our times. The freedom of a biker zooming through Paris.

Sunless Speed

Let’s head into the weekend at a hundred miles per hour – average! This is the beefy Black Shadow which, in 1952, set a six hour endurance record on the racetrack at Montlhery. This very machine was sold at auction a couple of years ago for $200,000. That’s four hundred bucks a mile.

Yellow Thruxton

Yellow is the color people most often associate with amusement, optimism, gentleness, and spontaneity, but also with duplicity, envy, jealousy, avarice, and, with cowardice. It plays an important role in Asian culture, where it is seen as the color of happiness, glory, wisdom, harmony and culture.

Quite a range of emotions in this color.

The word yellow comes from the Old English geolu, geolwe  meaning yellow, or yellowish, derived from the Proto-Germanic word gelwaz “yellow”. It has the same Indo-European base as the word yell; which means both bright and gleaming, and to cry out. Yellow is a color which cries out for attention.

Hippy Hipsters from Hip-City.

We’re more like the Hip-replacement crowd… But the fashion-fun folks at Vogue magazine know a cool prop when they see one. A lightly customized new classic Triumph Scrambler. I’m going to teach Geordie how to ride on pillion like that.

Che

Ernesto Guevara. Doctor, revolutionary, icon, cigar smoker. And horse rider. We know his exploits across South America on his old Norton but here he is in full guerilla mode riding through the Sierra Maestra mountains of southern Cuba looking the part. A new world awaits those who dare.

Viva la revolución

Wonderfully evocative photo from 1956. It’s film actress  Lina Salomé on her classy Harley Davidson in Havana Cuba. I was in a lecture about planning, design and landscape architecture in the largest Caribbean island today and it reminded me of our trip there ten years ago.
