Things of Beauty

Prototyp Hamburg

Whilst in the northern German city on the Elbe I visited this marvelous collection of Porsche one-offs and racing cars. Stunning beauty in all of their lines.

911’s, 356’s, Type 64 ‘Berlin-Rome’ car (the black one at the head of the post).

The curved bodywork flows in all directions like a Henry Moore sculpture. Wood forms were used to achieve this beauty.

Amsterdam Market find

Books & Comics

– strolling along a rain drizzled Albert Cuypers Market I spied these ‘zines pinned up at a stall selling old publications. Michel Vallant stood out as something to post on the blog (sorry it’s taken so long!). The stories protagonist is a French racing car driver – however he looks to enjoy the adrenaline rush of two wheels too! It is still published (since 1950’s) and a distinguishing character trait of his is “dashing”.

Wisconsin Roads are made of cheese

Of the finest kind.

Beautiful weather today and a great 200 miler over into the Kettle Moraine area south west of Milwaukee. Smooth rolling triads through elephant eye high corn. Stopped for a fine late breakfast at Whitewater, a pleasant wee town with historical downtown. Key Lime cheesecake was a fine accompaniment to the meat-lovers skillet! Good mates to ride with!

Volvo

Under the Tracks

Beautiful burgundy P1800 Volvo passed before my eyes just as I was leaving work. Designed by Pelke Peterson whilst a student under the Italian carrozzeria Pietro Frua. The P1800 was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, the same year as the E-Type Jaguar. The Saint TV show starring Roger Moore as Simon Templar used the Volvo as his car after Jaguar declined to offer their XKE.

Gadding along LSD

Cycling marshaling

Another year helping take the photographers and race marshals around the cycling course up and down Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Weather just right for the dry stages but the swimming outset was canceled due to choppy conditions.

The road to mysen.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the leafy boondocks

A rusty patina accumulates

Someone would certainly have their work cut out for themselves with this bedraggled specimen. Texas plates so answers to the name of “Bubba”.

Burlington & Racine

Sounding like a railroad line…

todays jaunt saw us hoofing it into Wisconsin to find some good sweeping country roads. Through the quiet town of Burlington where we stopped to have coffee to the lakefront harbor at Racine.

Good weather was enjoyed too.

Cats enjoying a quiet moment together. The red accents of the current sport version of Triumphs feline Moto gives it a splendid level of pizzazz. Ginger kit like the look too!

Granchester

And is there honey still for tea?

Sunday evening tv. One of the recurring series on the local PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) is Granchester. About a local detective called Geordie, played by Robson Green, and a young handsome Vicar played by Tom Brittney, as they take on local murders and rural criminal shenanigans. Based in the early sixties with youthful vigor the reverend hares around the Cambridgeshire countryside on a BSA Rocket Goldstar. Perfect machine for the task at hand!

The Old Vicarage by poet Rupert Brook is pure epitome of Englishness and a lost Arcadia of the world before the Great War. The Orchard is a wonderful place for tea and scones.

Gurning

New Boots

No horse collar to frame my grin. Just my new tires (tyres) for the Tiger. Easiest way to tote them to the garage at work. These are Shinko’s with a 90/10 tread (road/trail).

T-Shirt Time

Lucky

Picking up a bottle of pop I saw this chap wearing a Lucky Brand top. Emblazoned with the Lucky Vintage Motorcycle Works. I might try and pick one up to add to the wardrobe.

Independent

View of the City

An early morning scoot down DuSable Lake Shore Drive before 4th of July crowds started to make their way to the beaches and parks. Stopped for my favorite view of the skyline. Warm day but a cool breeze wafted from a still Michigan.

Four Hundred

Small is Beautiful

Triumph have released news of their upcoming small bikes. Street and Scrambler varieties of a 400cc single. Aimed at the beginner, city rider or those looking for a whole load of fun. They should have called them The Cub. But smashing looking machines. Expected to roll into dealerships early next year. I think I predicted this a few years back.
