The Sun is shining in the Sky

Grape – all smiles for this ’58 Twenty One owner/rider. The blue sky mirrors the sky blue bodywork. Bathtub rear skirt, valanced front fender, and nacelle headlight. In this condition they are as rare as hens teeth. Little 350cc engine still had heart.

Red is the Tank

Cherry Pie – a year ago today we were enjoying Michigans best cherry pies in Beulah up near the  Lelanau Peninsula. Well, this fine example of a pre-unit Triumph sure is a tasty treat wrapped in pastry, a la mode.

You’re nicked!

The White Saint – in the fifties and sixties the British police utilized a TR6 Triumph for speedy road duty. Standard road bike with wider ratio gearbox, single seat, radio, leg protectors and the ubiquitous blues and twos.

Fat bottomed girls they’ll be riding today

I want to ride my bicycle- This 1903 Triumph safety bike has such an elegant shape. With a sinuous open frame to allow women to pedal in their skirts. These old human powered machines just look so perfect in their functional purpose. The advert to the left is a mid-Century model promoting the bike as a form of exercise; though the dropped cross bar seems a tad dated.

‘shop scene

Morrie’s Place – the busy workshop at Ed Zenders place is a hive of activity. With all four workstands taken up with motorcycles under repair, a workbench full of engines, parts, tools; and more bikes awaiting attention, there’s a healthy dose of work in this great vintage ‘shop. Overhead the old signs herald days past when more local garages kept owners rides roadworthy.

ME109 successor

Bubble Trouble – this bright red three-wheeler beamed at me by the side of the road today. I had to screech to a stop, park nearby and get some snaps. It’s a Messerschmitt car KR200 or Kabinenroller. Not being allowed to manufacture aircraft after WW2 these were Designed by Fritz Fend with Willy Messerschmitt only putting his name on them. 40,000 were made between 1954 and 1965. The streamlined appearance with fuselage inspired body gives it a futuristic look even today. Flying cars anyone?

Car Heaven

D-Type   On our outings around and about Philadelphia we stopped in at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum. A seemingly endless line-up of sportsters from the last Century. There was one gap in the display.. a certain 1956 Jaguar. Asking where it was I was informed it was in the workshop. Luckily they turned the lights on an there it was sat up on the lift. Beautiful even from behind. The collection covers race cars that were used in historical events such as: Le Mans, Nürburgring, Sebring, Bonneville, Watkins Glen, Brooklands, Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. Fred Simeone’s ’55 Mercedes Benz SL300 Gullwing sits in the ‘shop, as does a Porsche 356 that was donated to the collection.

Weeding

Common or Garden variety – we’re rained-in Longwood Garden Conservatory waiting for a fountain light show. So I’ll get on with a blog post. A gouache illustration with aged Triumph Thunderbird amongst verdant greenery. A moss covered dry stone wall and gloomy rain-fattened sky denote a very English scene.

Mac Men

Mad Man – the original Don Draper is an illustrator by the name of Macaulay ‘Mac’ Conner. We stopped in at the Delaware Museum of Art where a superb exhibition of his work is on show. 50’s glam advertising with clean bold lines and fashionable people… that was when people smoked like chimneys and drank like fish… but they were ever so beautiful!

Ohio River Road

Biker Memorobilia – leather jacket, old lid, tasseled shirt and vintage photographs of a bygone motorcycling scene. We’re in Pittsburgh today so the Prowlers jacket seems appropriate…
