Pans, Flats, Shovels & Knuckles

Harley Davidson – the local manufacturer made good attendance at the northern Illinois gathering on Sunday. Each was careworn with decades of roadwon patina.

The Wild Angels

Taking their name after the cult classic Roger Corman 1966 B-Movie starring Peter Fonda this rocker group use the cafe racer as the equivalent to US Hells Angels choppers. This photo line-up has a bevy of BSA’s, Nortons and Triumphs. Clip-ons, quiffs, leathers and attitude. The middle Moto with ape hangers is …?

Oil Bag 3×3

The Cub – a high exhaust pipe routing is creating a bottleneck just under the oil tank. So some on-line investigating the various oil tank mounting lets me see how to get the engine oil feed and return pipes snugged behind a hot pipe. I think I may have a solution: mount the ‘oil bag’ higher with a tab extender allowing the lubricating gubbins to function.

Hump Day

Royal Signals – let’s get through the midweek with an airy leap over the captains sedan. Good form will see us land somewhere beyond Thursday and land aplombly in Friday.

Linework by Ink

Technical Illustration- I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love these cutaway engineering drawing from the fifties and sixties clarifying the innards and mechanical workings of the engines and machines of the day. AutoCAD can be too cold and lifeless whereas the hand drawn draughtsmanship is lively like Marvel Comics Jack Kirby ink and brush work.

Light the Blue Touch Paper

The Shape of Fast: kinda scruffy, in need of attention, but all there. For sale recently on EBay this forty odd year old Metisse (Mongrel) framed Triumph needs a caring home to enable this fiberglass faired fancy to fly again.

Come up and see me, make me smile.

Perfect Couple: pillion happily hugging the pilot as they zoom along. Nice cafe’d pre-unit looks the part.

Poyekhali!

“Поехали! Lets Go!” 55 years ago this enthusiastic Soviet test Pilot got into a cramped sphere atop a rocket and blasted off for an orbit of the earth and into the history books. Kedr (Cedar -Siberian Pine) was his call name, Vostok 1 (East 1) his ship.

Is that a real bicycle or a Sears bicycle?

The Rebel Yell! We had a day trip to Milwaukee today, where the Museum of Art has been reorganized with a new layout for their modern collection. I spied this cracking bicycle devised by Wisconsin industrial designer Brook Stevens. A basic trailing arm front suspension, double rear wheel caliper brakes, stick gear shifter, comfy banana seat, and a noodle of a shape to the handlebars.

Percival’s steed

In the 1969 Belgian Grand Prix, on the Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in the Ardennes, Tait was riding Triumph’s entry for the 500cc race – a version of the Triumph Daytona developed by Doug Hele. Percy travelled with the mechanics Arthur Jakeman and Jack Shemans in an old Ford Transit van, in which the three of them also had to sleep.

Percy led the world champion Giacomo Agostini for three laps to finish second to the MV Agusta at an average speed of 116 mph.

The British Rouge Sheep Society, Knighton Flock

Triumph racing team member, chief test rider and all-round motorcycle guru: Percy Tait. Riding twins and triples at Grand Prix, The TT, Bol d’Or, NW200 and a million miles of road testing in between. This photo is taken during a one thousand mile endurance race in the sixties on s production bike.

In latter years he has become a show winning sheep breeder.

The Mighty Mini

Race Day. Pack the car we’re off to the track. Well if your car is a classic mini you’d better make sure your Moto is a lightweight one: here they’re toting a Triumph Cub in the boot door. As needs demand!

Did I ever tell you I passed my driving test in a Mini?
