Morrie’s Place

image

An outing today saw Morrie’s Place in Ringwood IL as the destination. Run by British Bike master Ed Zender it is an Aladdin’s Cave of old motorcycles, endless parts shelves, a well tooled workshop and knowledgeable help.

image

BSA’s, Triumphs, Norton’s, AJS’s, Vincents… Bonneville’s, Tigers, Thunderbolts, Gold stars, Black Lightning, Rocket 3’s. Clean examples, oily well ridden ones, custom racers, correct restorations.

image

There is always someone passing through for a part, a chat, dropping off or picking up. The ‘phone rings often. Ed’s encyclopedic ken is great when working on a project. It’s great that there are resources like this for keeping these classic machines on the road.

Diner Destination

image

Perfect spring weather allowed a good spin on the bikes, up through Lake County and back along the North Shore. Lunch stop in Zion for some delicious blueberry pancake’s with sausage links on the side.

Washed down with endless fresh coffee.

Sunny? Oh yes! It was a sunglasses sky aloft…warm air blew through my unzippered jacket vents.

Bud

image

I picked up my cylinder head and barrel today from The Machine Shop, a little hidden gem in Rogers Park where Bud Clements works his time honored magic on engine parts old, new, common and esoteric. He rebored the cylinder to receive the new 60 over piston and cleaned, set new guides, and lapped seats for a pair of valves too. He knows his stuff down to the micron.

The great convergence is upon us!

If the shoe fits…

image

An open day at Motoworks Chicago I just HAD to try the latest Thruxton for size. “Like a Glove” is my response. Looks good from all angles and detailed nicely! Now where did I put that piggy bank?

Snow Days

A Winter Weather Advisory: drifting snow and plummeting temperatures here in the Midwest allow alternate moto activities to be planned and undertaken.
image

Winterize your ride! Don’t let a salty ice crust build up or an errant plough tip it into the road side snowbank. Take it into a dry indoors where the typical preparations, maintenance and upgrades could be undertaken. Plenty have written about the furlough storage needs so I’ll not go into them here.
image

Or you could put studs on your tires, dress in weather appropriate hard and whizz around a frozen lake oval. Here’s a Tiger being put through such paces. It looks fun!

Tomorrow morning temperatures are expected to be -20 Fahrenheit… With won’t chill reaching fifty below…. Stay Warm! Me? I have my Cub Project to plan!

Things are looking up!

image

A sunny sky greeted this early November weekend morning so without much ado the bike was kicked into life and a great ride up through Lake County was had. Leaf fall blew through the woods and grassland of adjacent forest preserves; a skip through Zion along a churned azure Lake Michigan rounded the loop. Roads weren’t too busy so it allowed comfortable progress along the way.

Autumn Color

image

A snatched ride along a sunlit glowing Sheridan Road bounded by the reds, oranges, browns and yellows of the fall canopied trees. Blue-blue skies  complemented the golden hues and a cool air kept the lung vigorous. Not bad for an early November spin!

“At no other time (than autumn) does the earth let itself be inhaled in one smell,
The ripe earth; in a smell that is in no way inferior to the smell of the sea, bitter where it borders on taste,
And more honeysweet where you feel it touching the first sounds.
Containing depth within itself, darkness, something of the grave almost.”

Two on the Road

image

I took an opportunity with decent weather and a visit to friends a short ride down Lake Shore Drive to encourage my better half to ride pillion. A couple of sweet spots headin’ down “from Hollywood with water on the drivin’ side…”

Falling Up

Autumn weather can be questionable at times… Especially when trying to grab a late season ride. A mix of gray skies, spitting rain with an occasional breath of pale sun followed our short ride north this afternoon.

image

The bikes were raring to go too; seen here whilst we stop for a warming pumpkin spice latte.

Smiles abound with fall color’d roads though!

Where the sea and the sky meet…

A wee scoot up the shore to blow the cobwebs out of the system. Super sunny skies, scudding water surface and a fresh breath of air.

For late September it is what could be considered Perfect Weather.

The Old Bush Road

image

DEAR old road, wheel-worn and broken,
    Winding through the forest green,
Barred with shadows and with sunshine,
    Misty vistas drawn between.
Grim, scarred bluegums ranged austerely,
    Lifting blackened columns each
To the large, fair fields of azure,
    Stretching ever out of reach.
See the hardy bracken growing
    Round the fallen limbs of trees;
And the sharp reeds from the marshes,
    Washed across the flooded leas;
And the olive rushes, leaning
    All their pointed spears to cast
Slender shadows on the roadway,
    While the faint, slow wind creeps past.

Ancient ruts grown round with grasses,
    Soft old hollows filled with rain;
Rough, gnarled roots all twisting queerly,
    Dark with many a weather-stain.
Lichens moist upon the fences,
    Twiners close against the logs;
Yellow fungus in the thickets,
    Vivid mosses in the bogs.

Dear old road, wheel-worn and broken,
    What delights in thee I find!
Subtle charm and tender fancy,
    Like a fragrance in the mind.
Thy old ways have set me dreaming,
    And out-lived illusions rise,
And the soft leaves of the landscape
    Open on my thoughtful eyes.

See the clump of wattles, standing
    Dead and sapless on the rise;
When their boughs were full of beauty
    Even to uncaring eyes
I was ever first to rifle
    The soft branches of their store.
O the golden wealth of blossom
    I shall gather there no more

Now we reach the dun morasses,
    Where the red moss used to grow
Ruby-bright upon the water,
    Floating on the weeds below.
Once the swan and wild-fowl glided
    By those sedges, green and tall;
Here the booming bitterns nested;
    Here we heard the curlews call

Climb this hill and we have rambled
    To the last turn of the way;
Here is where the bell-birds tinkled
    Fairy chimes for me all day.
These were bells that never wearied,
    Swung by ringers on the wing;
List! the elfin strains are waking,
    Memory sets the bells a-ring!

Dear old road, no wonder, surely,
    That I love thee like a friend!
And I grieve to think how surely
    All thy loveliness will end.
For thy simple charm is passing,
    And the turmoil of the street
Soon will mar thy sylvan silence
    With the tramp of careless feet.

And for this I look more fondly
    On the sunny landscape, seen
From the road, wheel-worn and broken,
    Winding through the forest green.
Something still remains of Nature,
    Thoughts of other days to bring
For the staunch old trees are standing,
    And I hear the wild birds sing!

The Shadow

Early morning rides can be the best! No traffic, cool fresh air, long shadows following you…

What can you get for two back teeth…

This low mileage trumpet badg’d red colored Thruxton is for sale locally…. Need to win the pools!

image

Only one word for that: “Phoarr!” But I’m afraid my dentist and endodontrist skipped away with my fun-funds earlier this year….

A Saturday Road

Perfect weather with blue blue skies and nice riding temperatures. Took the bike out for an hours spin up the road. Although you need to head out a fair bit to get good roads there’s a small section through a Forest Preserve area along the Skokie Lagoons. It’s only a couple and a half miles long but you can run up and down it at least twice for good measure…

image

It shows up its wiggle on Google Maps…

The bike was happy too  🙂

Little Lion Man

This is a big music weekend coming up in the Windy City. Lollapalooza the annual shindig for contemporary tastes. One of the headliners on Saturday will be the lads from blighty Mumford & Sons, English country folk balladeers. Just so happens they’re Triumph riders, here front man Marcus Mumford with his T100 in London.

image

Nice jacket son! He even spins around a city on it in one of their videos “Whispers in the Dark”

image

He was spied at the local Triumph dealer Motoworks earlier today ogling the bikes. Their Facebook page captures the moment.
