Blade Runner – Currently watching The Directors Cut of this sublime film based on Philip K. Dick’s novella. Illustrator Syd Mead was behind many of the futuristic visuals for the vehicles, buildings and daily accessories in the dystopian realm. We’re only one year away from its date: November 2019… Who’s to say if we don’t descend into that state of affairs by then?
“Fiery the angels rose fall, and as they rose fall deep thunder roll’d. Around their shores: indignant burning with the fires of Orc.” William Blake / Roy Batty

Ship of the Desert – clean example of a Triumph Trophy TR6C that sold a few years back for just shy of $15k at a Bonhams auction. Bikes like this was de rigeur for desert racing in the sixties. The twin high pipes adorning this cactus green example and appropriate Camel advertising set up a sandy outlook for the deep pocketed owner.
(The camel connection was for Hump-Day)

Backfire! One of the unfriendly characteristics of a kickstarting motorcycle is the occasional pre-detonation that flails the lever back into your foot or shin. There aren’t enough curse words in the English language when this happens… Fantastic depiction by the talented pen and ink work of Dutch illustrator Charles Burki “The Recoil!”

Sassy Siren – sunny smile under a blue sky. Personalized scrambler with funky tank graphics and well lagged pipes. Workmanlike clogs too. Rosie the Riveter lives!

Beefy Bonnie – classy rear-end view of a 70’s Triumph. A magazine advert promoting the good price of this five speed model which at £501.93 or you could get the doughty Tiger for £459.56. For reference the weekly wage was £40 a week, a loaf of bread 10p, a pint? 25p.

Tinman – clockwork motor wound up with a small key. These brightly colored toys are fun to look at; both the illustrated mechanics as well as the riders clothing. Some original examples can reach prices like a real motorcycle… my favorite is the couple riding smartly on the top right.

T-Shirt – a year-end clear out saw several old tee’s being relegated to cleaning rag status. All had seen better days, and it’ll make room for new Moto-themed tops…

Green Goddess- one of my favorite colors is apple green (well, Kawasaki Green to some…) so I particularly like that hue perfectly used on this late 60’s Trident. The black accent swoops on the tank balance perfectly with the eyebrow tank badges.

All Hail Soviet Physical Culturists! – propaganda poster from the early CCCP days has a huge Red Flag emblazoned with Stalin’s profile unfurled and being proudly held aloft by some Communist country-proud woman. The machine gun weaponized PMZ 750 V-Twin transports the prone Driver and flag bearer. This year marks 100 years since the October Revolution. Poster by Aleksandr Druzhkov. The motif is clear and powerful, the message strong, and the population are driven.

Insomnia Mechanics – a wide-eyed and wakeful Robert Crumb -like character has a fitful nocturne wondering about the engine reassembly. A three dimensional jigsaw that must come to life upon completion. A cup of Horlicks on the bedside table is needed, with a workshop manual on hand, and a cat on the bed to keep you company.

Black Electrical Tape – this about sums it up. After poring over maps to memorize roads, junctions, towns, and other landmarks; you’d take a folded-up map and either stuff it in a front pocket or, as in this case, tape it onto your bike. Ideally in a waterproof Ortlieb clear map case.
