The Meadows

Las Vegas – the roads were smooth and not too busy, bikes ran well, and the lunch stop in Antioch had a good selection of good diner cookin’! Dash of autumnal color on the trees under an aquamarine clear blue sky.

Swap Shop – there were a few folding tables and tarpaulin with various items for any restorer looking for that all essential original part. Amal carburetors by the shoeboxful, Smith’s instruments displayed three by three, and a drawer of Lucas fun ‘n’ games for the mystical art of classic bike electrics.

Countin’

NBT DGR FAB – plenty of vintage motorcycles out on the road last Sunday. These ones in particular piqued my interest. A pre-unit featherbed framed Triton (owned by organizer Larry Fletcher), a BSA C11 single , and a clean example of the great Triumph Trident. Like a one, two, three..

DGR

Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride – a huge turnout for the mass ride in Chicago today. Everyone dressed up to the nines and a super route was taken directly through downtown and along Lake Shore Drive. 90 degree weather was eased by a pleasant breeze off the azure waters of Michigan. There was about 700 riders all told.

Flat Track Men

Oval Dirt – history in color! The greats Dick Mann (2) BSA, Gene Romero (20) Triumph, and Mart Lawwill (18) H-D, look beat after what will have been a ‘edge-of-your-seats race.

Nine

Three by Three – something like this would make a terrific early birthday present for me… boxes of components; frame and wheels; engine cases with crank and head. Would need a parts book, workshop manual, clear workbench, and several spare evenings (honey?). Well, I don’t smoke, gamble or drink heavily… gotta have at least one vice!

Parthenocissus tricuspidata

Ivy League – dusted-off and kicked the wee green tiger to life earlier today. Took it along a few alleys and around a couple of parking lots. It’s a friendly little thumper that is light to maneuver in tight turns and when bumpy undertire. Need to plan for a trip to some off-road facility to get it around a trail, over a dune, or through some woods.

Summit

Mountain View – September is a good month to be in the hills: lush flanks with a promise of snow on the rugged peaks. A curvy road and distant views. Full tank of gas, sunglasses, and no immediate place to be…

Tunnel Vision

Go towards the Light – Friday night and the weekend is here… put your hair down and let it wave in the breeze as your scoot zooms along the sun drenched lanes.

Summertime Special

Denim Days – perfect September weather was a treat today as we took the Bonnie’s for a spin north. Not too busy on the roads and a few nice stretches to open ’em up. I did see an odd tree here and there with very early fall color… yup the years getting on!

Route 12

West Dunes Highway – one of the best stretches of the weekends trip is a section through the wooded back dune. The canopies arch overhead and there’s just enough bend in the road to keep your swooping motion fun.

South Shore

Coaling Tower – the ride today took us along Route 12 into Michigan. It runs parallel to various rail lines including the South Shore. This structure stands just outside of Michigan City and was used to refuel steam locomotives.

Calumet River span – another distinctive structure was the raised bridge over the Calumet. Great engineering. This was in its up position for maintenance. The detour took us over the 95th St Bridge; another bascule structure, which was used to dramatic effect in the Blues Brothers car chase.
