Artie Radcliffe

Back in the day when Tiger Cubs was a fresh new model from Triumph the trials riders saw its supple format a the ideal tool one bloke from Bradford utilized its lithe characteristics to great effect.

image

He was a Scottish six day trial rider, and national competitor on the technical off-road circuit in the fifties and sixties. He stayed on British iron, including AJS at a time when riders were turning to the European and Japanese two strokes. In latter years he enjoyed beekeeping on the Isle of Man. I’m sure he enjoyed the TT spectacle each year from some hedgerow line corner.

Artie Ratcliffe has died in 2009 at an Isle of Man nursing home aged 83.

Good style on the Cub though, and a lovely looking machine too.

Harvey Mushman

Rugged knobbly tires lined up ready for a hare across the SoCal desert. Indeed it’s our old pal Steve McQueen gunning his Triumph sled for a hoof over the dust, sand and scrub if an arid Joshua tree’d scene.

Feet? Who needs ’em? Not Murray Hambro!

On 9th December 2010 Lance Corporal Murray Hambro of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment was going about his duties patrolling Afghanistan on a second tour of duty. Then a case of wrong place, wrong time arose; VERY wrong time. A sizeable roadside bomb went off under their vehicle. Sitting in the turret he was shot up like a cannonball and crumpled to a landing in the distance. Shattered feet, broken neck vertebrae, smashed body. End of story? Not likely for this doughty tankie! During rehab when the docs asked him what his hobbies were and he responded ‘motorcyclin’, they rebutted ‘find another one son’. He’d lost both legs below the knee.
Like some latter day Douglas Bader he’s is back on the saddle, not only riding but racing! And Triumphs at that!

image

What we have here sir, is a man with an unquenchable spirit. Ride safe son, ride fast, but ride on!

Thruxton Racer

We stopped into Woodstock Triumph on Sunday, and after meandering through the Harley googling throngs clad in their ‘biker’ leathers and eyes bedazzled by chrome by the acre and bike by the hundredweight, I happened upon this cracker if a moto. A race ready Triumph twin with lashings of speed worthy components. But it doesn’t look over the top; just a sublime machine for gannin’ quick, gannin’ roond, and honkin’ on the anchors when needed.

As the fork says the rider is one Brice Cooper. http://www.bricecooper.com
Here it is in action. As Graham Hill would probably say “Useful Tool, has a bit of poke”

Where there’s Smoke

A century ago many small-time bicycle manufacturers tried their hand at motorizing their contraptions. One such ‘shop was Pope from Westfield MA who ran with the best of ’em: Indian, Flying Merkel, Cyclone. Here’s a smashing looking board racer ready for a rider with plenty of derring do to hare around one of the infamous wood tracks of the day; come a cropper on that circuit and you’ll be pulling splinters for weeks…. If at all you make it! Harris Tweed isn’t too great a protective clothing for speed work.

image

A cardinal name on the tank too…

image

… And at speeds approaching The Ton on steeply banked tracks a higher power was needed if the competitors ‘came a cropper’. Ouch!

A Mans Moto: without a tail!

When perfection comes together the outcome is truly sublime. Norton’s decades long experience with two-wheeled racing reaches a zenith with their 500cc Manx. That big piston thumping out power with a rorting boom as it hares around the lanes and circuits of the racing realm.

Dusty Trail

On the continuing theme of sun, bikes, fun and yikes; here’s our old friends Bud Ekins and Steve McQueen haring along some back roads SoCal trail.
I like to see Triumph Twins put to good use, heeled over the way physics dictate forces, speed and balsnce; knobby tyres hardly touching the gravelly path, and the riders concentrating on the way ahead. “Watch out for that ditch lad

Not your fathers heroes.

To celebrate The Man in Blacks birthday here’s a very little known film that Johnny Cash wrote the soundtrack for (along with Carl Perkins and Bob Dylan). It starred Robert Redford as a happy-go-lucky racer, Big Halsy Knox, who chases the adventures offered of both track and ‘field’; he takes on a mechanic sidekick, Little Fauss, who looks up to him, and true a early 70’s buddy movie ensues.

20130226-190925.jpg
There are allegiances made and broken; a love interest, in the form of a drop-out muse played by Lauren Hutton, as the fabulously named Rita Nebraska; and of course super racing cinematography both on-board and track-side.
But Cash’s droll voice powers through with his balladeers songs.

Happy Birthday Johnny!

Not so careless torque

The Tau of Life: The echoing O’s of the Norton logo repeated in the speed tipped wheels of this racer creates a strong Moto-image. Force times by its displacement vector.

The leg bone’s connected to the…

I titled yesterday’s blog about Aldana’s leathers and omitted an image of them! Well here he is in all his skeletal glory!

Not only a set of deathly leathers but sitting atop a big Yoshimura tuned Kawasaki Zed at Daytona.
More shots of him in action steering the big lad into corners…

These are the days of the early superbikes which, with nary a nod to the rider would spit them off if pushed too far. The engines were ahead of the frames so racing them meant nerves of steel and the skill of a rodeo cowboy. No wonder he could wear a Superman outfit when haring around a dirt oval sideways…

20130220-224705.jpg
Well, let’s get back on track, so to speak, he still races, albeit in a senior class, and here’s a shot of him aboard a latter day Triumph Daytona 675 at a Mid Ohio race. Smooth as silk.

Skeleton Leathers

That means it’s Dave Aldana time! Racing with the best of ’em back in the seventies on the AMA Grand National Championship. An exuberant and daring style combined with a showy attire garnered him fame and success in a wide range of motorcycle races: flat track oval, speedway, motocross or road racing.

20130219-200247.jpg
Starting out as a newcomer for the BSA team with the likes of Dick Mann, he cut his teeth on the big Rocket 3 triple; the British Superbike of its day.

Move over Murray!

Murray Walker that is! His enthusiastic voice rang out the excitement of motorsports for decades. Two as well as four! Unless you can also count the 6 wheeled Elf Tyrell F1 cars! BBC reported today that the next Formula One season will be commentated by the lovely Suzi Perry who has been the voice for Auntie’s MotoGP for the last ten years. Well of course she is a two-wheeled MotoLady which includes a love of the old Triumph badged cycles.

Hemi

Look closely at this Triumph engine and you see a small tuning adjustment to scavenge more power from the twin. The spark plug has been repositioned to be directly over the center of the piston. What is the reason for this? Well the valve positions relative to the chamber and domed piston head provides the most efficient and powerful bang from the cross flow pattern within the chamber. Of course carb tuning and ignition timing are essential to attain these extra ponies!

20121030-213741.jpg

Found online, here is a good summary of a Hemi engine…..

The term Hemi which is short for Hemispherical which simply means half sphere which is what the combustion chamber looks like, with one valve on each side.
The Hemi has been around for a long, long time in various forms. Early Triumph motorcycles used this design in 1937 and continued using it up until 1988. Chrysler borrowed ideas for their design from Weslake which built speed parts for Bonneville salt flat racers. Chrysler really utilized it best in automobiles in the early fifties and it’s still the all time power king in racing. A drag racing blown hemi produces in excess of 6000 horsepower which is many times what anything else is capable of producing.

The hemi has four main advantages:

1) The spark plug(s) reside directly in the middle and top of the combustion chamber. This makes for a nice, even firing pattern. This is why Hemi engines have spark plug holes right in the middle of the valve covers. Other “wedge” engines like Chevy and Ford V-8’s have their spark plugs off-center which is cheaper to build but less efficient.

2) Larger valve size. Draw a circle on a piece of paper. Now draw a line through the middle of it. Now draw two circles on ONE side of that line and you’ll see how most ordinary V-8 heads are designed. To draw a Hemi, place one big circle on one side of the line and another big circle on the other side of the line. Bigger valves mean more efficient and rapid airflow through the engine.

3) Larger combustion chamber surface area. The chamber is of the pentroof design (used by Ricardo in the 1910’s) which means it’s kinda funnel shaped. More area means more even heat transfer and distribution. More fuel and air can be crammed into the combustion chamber thus producing more power.

4) By placing the valves across from each other, the intake and exhaust flows across the combustion chamber. On a standard wedge head, they enter on one side, turn and cross and turn again to exit the cylinder. That’s inefficient. The Hemi is a true flow-through design.

Today, there are numerous manufacturer’s who make more efficient designs than the 2-valve Hemi. Most of the DOHC 4-valve designs will easily outflow a Hemi to a point. They have more valve area, however the size of the ports is usually very small increasing intake and exhaust velocity. That’s great if you want maximum combustion efficiency but not great if your goal is to move massive amounts of fuel and air through the engine.

For today, the modern Dodge street Hemi is primarily a sales tool. The name, reputation and mystique alone will sell cars. It does produce great power & torque and is definitely an option worth considering.

Basically big lungs, Big Bang, big power!
