Injun

1800cc motor – ample sized vee twin lump lets the bike stroll along at a good clip even two-up. Some highway miles, town bumbling and mountain ascents were all taken with great aplomb.

Indian Reservation

Picked up the big hauler today. Pulls like a train and is as comfy as a Chesterfield. After the aged but lithe Bonnie it was a little ponderous but once you swing it around along the road your muscle memory syncs in with its needs.

Palm Springs SoCal

Here we are in the hinterland of Southern California catching some winter sun, enjoying a taste of mid-century modernism and heading over to Joshua Tree on an Indian (which we’ll be picking up tomorrow).

The weather is just perfect!

A Sine Curve

Heading north along the Wisconsin shoreline of Lake Michigan you’ll end up in the narrowing peninsula of Door County. A Midwestern backwater of the northwoods with freshwater on your port and starboard. Highway 42 dodders along in a lazy meander through the trees which from the look at these images can be enjoyed any time of year. Autumn is of course the best.

My recommendation? Don’t order the Fish Boil!

The Road

The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway. Also known on the maps as NYS 97. Following the meandering state line between New York and Pennsylvania with a few winding sections overlooking the Delaware River for 70 miles.

Fall would be a good time to visit!

Home on Wheels

“But the place which you have selected for your camp, though never so rough and grim, begins at once to have its attractions, and becomes a very centre of civilization to you: “Home is home, be it never so homely.” – Henry David Thoreau

Bag

Gotta carry your stuff! Tote yer trash! Haul belongings. That’s where a decent bag comes in handy. A satchel-like messenger bag with leather straps and canvas body and nice stitched buckling. Strapped to your bike it’ll need to be made of tough stuff with crafted assembly.

A simple sac works too which can be crumpled into a pocket when not in use…

….or a heavier duffel: zipped opening to innards allowing just enough to be carried, a couple of pockets for odds and ends. Weekend trip?

WooHoo

Bonneville wave: a cute couple speeding along into the sixties on their travel ready Triumph. Sunny days ahead for the decade of the space-race, free love and the burgeoning optimism expected under the young JFK.

Jack of All Trades

A 2000 model Sprint adorned with an unfurled flag in apparent flutter across the side of this mile muncher. The George Cross, Saltire, & Paddy’s Cross make up the union flag.

Bike needs horizon and rider.

North or Bust

North Pole Bound? You are when heading along the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay. It’s a dusty gravel road which when sprayed down for the trucks can your you into a chocolate bunny riding a motorcycle. This is Australian Denis Devlin on his trailered Bonneville coated with Arctic dirt.  666km long with 24 hour daylight in summer…
More Easter than Xmas; Brer Rabbit ‘haring ‘ along.

Hit the road Steve!

This bottle green Chevy truck with a custom aluminum camper sitting in its long bed was once owned by Steve McQueen. Towards the end of his life he used it to go cross country and see the USA from the road.

Purchased from a migrant farmer the 1952 V6 engined 3800 was purchased from a migrant farmer from the side of the road.

Big mattress, plenty of storage and a tent-like inner ceiling it would be the perfect thing to scour the back roads and lost towns of the continent. The camper unit is called a dust-tite and was built by Harold van Hoosen.

This was up for auction this year… Unsure if it sold but the anticipated price was $600-800k.

Good Memories

About a year ago my wife and I were planning our great trip to the west coast. Riding two-up around and beyond the hilly streets of San Fransisco was one of the highlights. Not quite Steve & Jaqueline taking a break from filming Bullitt but close!

Framed

A mosaic of images to evoke the journey travelled yesterday.

“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Hump Day

As ungulates go the Camelus dromedarius is one of the most widespread humped animals used to swiftly haul goods and belongings across the desert regions of the globe. Dromadary Camel literally means “fast beast of burden”.

Triumph has a similar even toed steed in the Triumph Tiger Explorer. The fully kitted 1200 is a sturdy brute waiting for a nomad to take places.

Maybe Baby…

Hugh (the other) Laurie and co-star Joely Richardson as motorcycling couple in the 2000 film ‘Maybe Baby’. Rom-com shenanigans ‘n’ all that! Probably a good date movie…

His ride: a Triumph Thunderbird. The triple stalwart of the resurgence of Hinckley Co. A sturdy and decent scoot….

One on the local Craigslist for $3600… Perfect for two-up! Bags, passenger backrest, screen…. Open road beckons …
