A few canine stories of the week: it has been discovered that the domestication of or “best friend” most likely occurred in Europe during the last Ice Age. 10-14,000 years ago or so. Not in the Middle East as previously thought. The winters and glaciers drew wolves together with man. I believe the link of man and dog has lead to the initial development of civilization. A pack animal to protect a settling community. Here’s a herding Border Collie atop his/her owners Bonnie.
The other story was a dog trekking to Everest Base camp (17,500 feet). A happy pup, named Rupee, taken as a stray off the streets and now happy as Larry to follow their owner up into the Nepal Himalaya.

It’s a Dogs Life
Les liens du sang
The Englishman’s Englishman Clive Owen fly’s under the radar is most mainstream films. His low key characters are played seemingly effortlessly without too much fuss. Always a worthwhile watch. His latest offering is a 70’s crime thriller set in New York NY about two brothers separated by the law: Blood Ties.

Billy Crudup is his sibling and here they ride a period Triumph Bonneville, much like mine the Oil in Frame model of that time. Owen on pillion. The jackets are class! I had a tan blazer like that for wearing down the pub… Clive’s character gets to marry Mila Kunis’….. Not bad for an acting role! Look at that three piece suit! I didn’t have one of those for popping to the local!

An excellent vintage
Sommeliers say 1969 is a fine year for Burgundy wines; likewise the crimson red wine color scheme of that particular years Triumph Bonneville is seen as the zenith of the 650 twin carbureted classic. From engine, frame, brakes and overall balanced appearance it really does epitomize the Golden Age of the British motorcycle industry. Here’s my riding buddy Dean Rennie on his fine looking ’69.
It’s particularly good riding along as a pair of twins, when they’re revving in unison it sounds like a DeHavilland Mosquito… Not quite a brace of RR Merlin’s but the provenance of the 650 is worthy enough.
Things are looking up!
A sunny sky greeted this early November weekend morning so without much ado the bike was kicked into life and a great ride up through Lake County was had. Leaf fall blew through the woods and grassland of adjacent forest preserves; a skip through Zion along a churned azure Lake Michigan rounded the loop. Roads weren’t too busy so it allowed comfortable progress along the way.

Scale models are a great way to see how things fit together. I loved my Airfix and Matchbox 1:72 tanks, aircraft and their respective dioramas. Here’s a bolt together motorcycle kit; not quite your Tamiya, which would need several hours or days, but what looks like a fun few minutes nonetheless.
You could even use it to see how much restoration you want to carry out on your ’68. Here’s a real one: assembly required…. Much more FUN!
A Timelord on a Triumph
Dr Who? Here’s Matt Smith, the 11th incarnation of the Gallifreyan traveler of the space-time continuum aboard a Bonneville with his latest companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Louise Coleman. Typical mode of transport is of course the policebox disguised TARDIS but this’ll do in a pinch.
Daleks, Cybermen or Sontarans be damned!
I got you babe…
Sixties duo of the moment Sonny & Cher were the darlings of love; a clean cut reaction and sober reaction to the acid dazed counterculture. TV acting a politics ensued but that’s another story not to be covered here…. However Mr Bono likes to look cool, especially when not wearing his sheepskin vest… .. Go on kick ‘er over lad!
Watch out for any trees Sonny!
Falling Up
Autumn weather can be questionable at times… Especially when trying to grab a late season ride. A mix of gray skies, spitting rain with an occasional breath of pale sun followed our short ride north this afternoon.
The bikes were raring to go too; seen here whilst we stop for a warming pumpkin spice latte.
Smiles abound with fall color’d roads though!

Working Title
Eric Fellner’s production company, Working Title Films is currently one of the most successful in the industry. With movies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Fargo in the nineties, to the more recent Rush it encompasses the lesser mainstream items and ones I’d prefer to see.
A well framed portrait of him with prized vehicles: a Ferrari 458 Italia and a late 50’s Triumph Bonneville. Smartly attired he seems for attracted to the moto!

Country Living
Different color than what is typically seen defining the lines of a motorcycle: jade. Frame, tank, fenders ‘n’ all. This is an elegantly fettled Bonneville with just the right level of detail to make one desire. A mint icing to a fruity cake. The worn brown leather single seat with the usual racy clip-ons and rear-sets set what looks like a comfortable streamlined pose for its rider.
The rural farmyard setting gentrifies it and the complementary redhead quickens its heartbeat.
Mr. Jones
Actor Richard Gere utilizes an old familiar ride in this nondescript forgettable film from twenty years ago. We saw him on a T140 and whites in An Officer & a Gentleman… Here he totes around as some character with bipolar disorder with a more classic 60’s Bonnie.
It least he got to tootle around some sunny Californian streets on a sweet moto.
