Trois sur Cinq

Five of Three – though only in production from 1968 until 1975 the deathbed gasp of Meriden based Triumph was a stout hearted machine that came a little lacking and a little late with the appearance of Honda’s CB750. But in those short 7 years while the company was self destructing the model adapted as it could to meet the demands of the riding public. The first part of its life as the T150 saw a 750cc three cylinder, dry-clutch, with drum brake giving way to disc, and imaginative detailing such as the now classic ray-gun silencers. It’s final iteration under the T160 designation saw an electric start fitted, gear shifting moved to the left, and the confine tilted forward to improve weight distribution. The tank colors aren’t bright primary or indeed complementary ones, but are quite sophisticated hues that are very much associated with the late sixties and early seventies.

Stand Tall

Reach for the Skies – Sir Douglas Bader (1910-1982) was. WWII fighter ace who flew Spitfires and Hurricanes against the German Luftwaffe onslaught early on in the hostilities. However he’d lost both legs ten years prior and was not recommended for flying duties. Being very impressionable, with Air Command and a lack of skilled pilots he was recommissioned into the RAF. He flew over Dunkirk and in the Battle of Britain (One of The Few). However he had to bail out over France in August 1941, was captured, and spent the remaining part of the War imprisoned at the infamous Colditz Castle. As was required of RAF POW’s he continually attempted to escape. He was threatened with confiscation of his prosthetic legs. Very much a traditionalist conservative on many issues; he’s still considered one of Britain’s hero’s.

Why is this blog subject posted today you may ask? Well I had hip surgery to repair damaged tissue in the joint and shave some protruding bone down. So in my post operative discomfort I can think of Kenneth More Douglas Bader as inspiration.

Built for Speed

Donkey & Horse – “The story with the next one will be much more interesting. Built up as a road racer in 1973 with the best stuff available. Never finished and sat for 43 years. Now I get to finish it. New Trackmaster frame, trick motor, Magnesium wheels, Cieriani forks, Hunt plasma sprayed aluminum rotors, Lockheed calipers, Fontana master cyl, TR2 Yamaha tank and seat. It’s gonna be awesome!!! ” Richard Pollock (Mule Motorcycles)

à vendre sur la route

The Classifieds – a grand day with perfect summer weather and quiet roads. Getting out at 7 helped too before the heat and traffic built up! New carbs have given the Bonnie a new lease of life. Spied this ’71 example up near Antioch; in nice shape and waiting for a rider.

Food Mart

Ed & Erv’s – just shuttered up in the last couple of years this local Chicago convenience store has a timeless mid-20th Century vibe going on. So when I saw this Harley Davidson standing lazily outside I had to get a photo. A hint of vintage filter to sharpen the shadows and an evocative scene is created.

MMMMM

Five times Three – in the late sixties Triumphs triples were a force to be reckoned with when tuned for speed and power. Especially when under the engineering magic of Doug Hele (on the left). Instrumental in most major British fast bikes for the mid century decades. I can’t see the Sun setting on these machines… watch out Slippery Sam the Trident wielding gods are abroad!

The Rights of Women

International Women’s Day

WHILE Europe’s eye is fix’d on mighty things,The fate of Empires and the fall of Kings;

While quacks of State must each produce his plan,

And even children lisp the Rights of Man;

Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,

The Rights of Woman merit some attention.

First, in the Sexes’ intermix’d connection,

One sacred Right of Woman is, protection.—

The tender flower that lifts its head, elate,

Helpless, must fall before the blasts of Fate,

Sunk on the earth, defac’d its lovely form,

Unless your shelter ward th’ impending storm.

Our second Right—but needless here is caution,

To keep that right inviolate’s the fashion;

Each man of sense has it so full before him,

He’d die before he’d wrong it—’tis decorum.

There was, indeed, in far less polish’d days,

A time, when rough rude man had naughty ways,

Would swagger, swear, get drunk, kick up a riot,

Nay even thus invade a Lady’s quiet.
Now, thank our stars! those Gothic times are fled;

Now, well-bred men—and you are all well-bred—

Most justly think (and we are much the gainers)

Such conduct neither spirit, wit, nor manners.
For Right the third, our last, our best, our dearest,

That right to fluttering female hearts the nearest;

Which even the Rights of Kings, in low prostration,

Most humbly own—’tis dear, dear admiration!

In that blest sphere alone we live and move;

There taste that life of life—immortal love.

Smiles, glances, sighs, tears, fits, flirtations, airs;

‘Gainst such an host what flinty savage dares,

When awful Beauty joins with all her charms

Who is so rash as rise in rebel arms?
But truce with kings, and truce with constitutions,

With bloody armaments and revolutions;

Let Majesty your first attention summon,

Ah! ça ira! THE MAJESTY OF WOMAN!

Feet First

True Words – especially when pushing the bike too! But it’s handy to wear boots suitable for a little strolling at a break in the ride…

Pearl Harbor

“December seventh, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. We will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Jeff Lebowski

The Dude Abides – yep, Mr Bridges is 67 today. Putting in another year being an Achiever; hangin’ on like the best of ’em as El Duderino, enjoyin’ his beverage and keepin’ his opinion to himself whilst respecting yours. Even though he has to reckon with strikes and gutters, as well as ups and downs, we should take great comfort he’s still out there takin’ it easy for all us sinners. But heck, I’m paraphrasing… as well as ramblin’ … catch y’all down the trail.

Utility Mini

Baby Blue – clear out that back couch and the micro truck had many more uses: as a work horse (or pony) the rear barn doors offered ample access to the rear space. Breakdown. (RAC or AA), police work, workmans tote, camper van, or just plain truck. It sure was a versatile little car. Second only to the Model T in regards to adaptive use.

Minx

Clubman – also known in original guise as the Traveller, Estate, Austin ‘Shooting Brake’. People loved Sir Alec Issigonis’ diminutive Mini but needed a slightly larger carrier. Hence the longer wheelbase.
