Lemmy Kilmister Motorhead front man seen here in true british form with a fresh out the factory Bonneville 750.
Ode tae a motorcycle…. An’ its lass!
There was a lass, and she was fair,
At kirk or market to be seen;
When a’ our fairest maids were met,
The fairest maid was bonie Jean.
And aye she wrought her mammie’s wark,
And aye she sang sae merrilie;
The blythest bird upon the bush
Had ne’er a lighter heart than she.
But hawks will rob the tender joys
That bless the little lintwhite’s nest;
And frost will blight the fairest flowers,
And love will break the soundest rest.
Young Robie was the brawest lad,
The flower and pride of a’ the glen;
And he had owsen, sheep, and kye,
And wanton naigies nine or ten.
He gaed wi’ Jeanie to the tryste,
He danc’d wi’ Jeanie on the down;
And, lang ere witless Jeanie wist,
Her heart was tint, her peace was stown!
As in the bosom of the stream,
The moon-beam dwells at dewy e’en;
So trembling, pure, was tender love
Within the breast of bonie Jean.
And now she works her mammie’s wark,
And aye she sighs wi’ care and pain;
Yet wist na what her ail might be,
Or what wad make her weel again.
But did na Jeanie’s heart loup light,
And didna joy blink in her e’e,
As Robie tauld a tale o’ love
Ae e’ening on the lily lea?
The sun was sinking in the west,
The birds sang sweet in ilka grove;
His cheek to hers he fondly laid,
And whisper’d thus his tale o’ love:
“O Jeanie fair, I lo’e thee dear;
O canst thou think to fancy me,
Or wilt thou leave thy mammie’s cot,
And learn to tent the farms wi’ me?
“At barn or byre thou shalt na drudge,
Or naething else to trouble thee;
But stray amang the heather-bells,
And tent the waving corn wi’ me.”
Now what could artless Jeanie do?
She had nae will to say him na:
At length she blush’d a sweet consent,
And love was aye between them twa.

Boots
Apart from yer lid, and yer gloves, …and yer jacket, there’s nowt more important for chewing away miles than a good pair of boots. Good firm leather, rugged soles, over-the-ankle protection and if course a no-nonsense look.
A high laced pair of Doc Martens would always look the part. Black or Tan sir? Take your pick!
Simple zip-up and buckle police jobs can get you noticed was a serious biker too.
Sleek, well heeled items with a sock-like fit built on an Italian last would suit a Bonneville owner or Daytona hooligan alike. Or just go the whole hog and dress up the pair of engineers boots with a Union Jack and logo.

Paul Simon, who is 73 today wrote this catchy tune in ’61 with the band Tico & the Triumphs. Love the film clip that goes with it.
Robert Zimmerman
He grew up near Duluth MN and headed out on the road picking up songs and singin’ heading out to New York. This weekend we’re staying on the North Shore of Lake Superior where the northern stretches of HWY61 hugs the coastline.
Must come back to ride it on a motorcycle. Wearing a t-shirt like Dylan.
Let’s. Go. Fast.

Smokin’
Nope, it’s not a tire burnout. Though a steroid made Speed Triple is good at that…
and no, it ain’t a pack of Marlboro…
I have a good bellow of white smoke from the Bonnie when kicked over and started from cold. A little burning oil and condensation, but it revs strong. It needs a good run. Light anyone?
Turn, turn, turn
A mastermind of engine technology. Mr Turner stands with the marvel of the vertical twin used for nigh- on fifty years. Here’s the birth of a child of the British motorcycle industry: its first iteration a 500cc Speed Twin.
Looks good now; it must have looked outstanding back then. The modern day Bonneville T100 takes a serious visual note from this very engine.
Gaffers Gallop
Over 60 years ago on October 5th one Mr Turner and a couple of colleagues took factory Triumph Terriers on a jaunt from Lands End to John O’Groats. Retold in the book “Traveling with Mr Turner”.
Of course Edward Turner was the father of The Speed Twin, the Thunderbird and their smaller brethren: the aforementioned Terrier and doughty Tiger Cub.
Pump Up the Volume
The Bonnie has been suffering from a little wet-sumping. That’s motorcycle incontinence to the general public; with this Triumph typically when a mote of debris has been sucked up from the scavenger into the oil pump. Itself a pair of pistons driven from an eccentric pin off the inlet camshaft.
Sprung ball bearings prevent backflow but can be jammed open with said unwanted grunge. Access and disassembly is straight forward under timing cover.
Buttoned-up, kicked over and timing sweetened. Took the old gal around the block and all seems good.
LEGO
Angry Toy: Black brick biker (*assembly required).
I learned a lit about how things are built using the basic blocks of LEGO. These days there are countless mouldings to allow anything to be made. Early Technic sets started the idea of gears, axles, riveted beams and the like.
An early motorbike kit had the option of building a combination or chopper, both with working piston engine and chain drive.
I loved the assembly drawings.
