Just been to see a great film: The Martian starring Matt Damon in the titular role also known as Mark Watney. Directed by Ridley Scott and based on a marvelous book by Andy Wier it tells the survival difficulties of an astronaut stranded on Mars in a fictional, though truly believable mission to the red planet. Two Thumbs Up! Go see it!

Hi GB. Absolutely agree, a cracker book, and especially as it’s his 1st novel …! I found I couldn’t put it down..I think as much as anything due to the geeky ‘facts’ and the ‘No 8 Wire*’ make-do type engineering solutions Watney comes up with to keep himself alive, which likewise kept me hooked throughout. (Note: No 8 Wire is a ubiquitous grade of fencing wire used since the 1840’s in NZ which has been put to every alternative use since from roadside motorcycle repairs to rudimentary tv antennas & everything in between)
