Imagine – John Lennon would have been 78 today. “Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.“

White -The late thirties saw the creation of what is sometimes considered the most beautiful of American cars: The Cord 812. The visual brainchild of noted automobile designer Gordon Buehrig; its sleek lines, emphasized by flip-up headlights, hidden hinges, and the classic wraparound ‘coffin’ grill, had looks that heralded a bright future. Cutting his teeth as head bodywork designer for Duesenberg he stated that a large influence on his design ethos was architect Le Corbusier’s book “Towards a New Architecture”.

General Motors – Pontiac designer Bill Mitchell created a devilish muscle car for the ’74 Car Show circuit. The Firebird Banshee was the concept and the creative team behind the aerodynamic body accompanied it with an inspired custom 500cc Honda.

Gilmore Car Museum – Hickory Corner, Michigan. One barn at the excellent automobile museum here in south west Michigan held a good selection of two-wheeled delights. From barn- fresh Harley Flathead to a polished to the nines Vincent Black Shadow. It was a good collection covering a century of motorcycling. One of The Fonz’s Triumph TR5 was there too; as well as an immaculate ’59 T120 Bonneville and a gutsy looking Indian hill climber.

Raccoon Tail – the inked lady with platinum blonde ponytails has a cheery disposition with the aptly sized cherry red ’64 Tiger Cub.

Drone’s Eye View – a spy in the sky filmed the start of the DGR last weekend. I spotted myself turning onto Ashland from Fulton.

Indian Summer- the weather today topped out at a balmy 85 degrees so I took the feline flyer out for an evening spin. The cat eyes lit up the road well as the rosy glow of a setting sun illuminated the West.

Kustom Kulture – whilst the bikers were waiting for ‘kickstands up’ this artist was showing off his talent of freehand pinstriping on a kid. The long bristled brush is traditionally squirrel fur and the bamboo handle short and rounded for easy control of smooth lines.
I wouldn’t mind getting some on the Bonnie’s tank…

Reportage – here are a few choice photos from Sunday’s outing. As folks gathered there was a promise of sunshine, but it failed to emerge. The cool overcast sky was a good backdrop to the urban scenery. The numbers swelling to 700 plus, rumbling engines and rock music played over the tannoy. The Cobra Lounge serves a buffet breakfast and cold brew coffee took care of thirst and caffeine. The two-wheeled caravan too a direct route along Randolph into The Loop, horns pealing and bystanders waving. A loop up Lake Shore Drive gave the bikes a little more leg stretch as side lanes were blocked off from cars and trucks.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride: Always Fun

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride – this years gathering brought many bikers together for a global-wide event now in its 5th or 6th year. Raising money and awareness for prostate cancer as men’s suicide rates it lets owners show off their togs as well as their rides. The route took the large group out through downtown to Lake Shore Drive and back to the Cobra Lounge on Ashland.

Wheels Roll – quick spin on early autumnal roads this afternoon. Just let the way lead me wherever on main highways, back lanes; suburbia and forest preserve.

Details – motorcycle events are truly marvelous places to gaze at the intricacies of mechanical engineering found on two wheels. Polished parts; crafted components; detailed design; and triumphant technology.

Crazing – I just loved the ceramic-like surface patina to this Triumph tank. The ivory swoosh emphasizes the peardrop shape; and the badge, filler cap and bolt cover add ornamentation.

Eight Years Ago – I took the rebuilt Bonnie out for a spin along Lake Shore Drive. A happy broad grinned memory. Parked-up at the Adler Planetarium I snapped a photo with the Chicago skyline beyond. It sported Gulf colors, original wheels and brakes and upright bars and footpegs. Well, I had evolved from there. A larger British tank in Mango Tango orange; rear-sets and ace bars; alloy wheels with modern rubber tires; and a disc brake front end. Where will it go from here? Time will tell!

OAP – better than a walking frame. One agéd owner had his Egli-Vincent fettled for taking their machine to the ton-plus speeds… which it’s more than capable of.
Chocks away chaps! Tally-Ho!
