Jee Tee Eye

Gertie – this was the indefatigable little blue Volkswagen we had for a decade. She did a grand job in toting us for many miles and a plethora of stuff about. A proper little workhorse. Sporty hearted, reliable when needed, and City & Highway proven. Sad to see her go…

Minx

Clubman – we brought home this little nipper yesterday. Champagne grey Mini Cooper in station wagon trim. Gertie the VW GTI was getting a bit incontinent, wobbly on her pins and was probably going to be an economical hole… so a replacement was contemplated. It had to be city manageable, greyhound transportable, cool and fun. The Mini checked all the boxes…

Car Story

Car Shopping – we need to replace Gertie with a new vehicle. Easier said than done! Trying to tick all the boxes of desirable qualities for our transport for an anticipated decade of use… These old Triumphs look fun, but each is quite specialized. Sporty, practical, small, fun…

PCH

Pacific Time – the highway that skirts the coastline of California is, in my opinion, one of the greatest roads I’ve been on. Here’s a old sixties photo of some guys hanging out at Point Dume near Malibu. Better than Instagram. That’s a 1969 Ford LTD they’re leaning against.

Van Life

White Van – the US precursor to the Transit: Ford Econoline. Ideal road trip conveyance in which you could haul your Moto to SoCal for the winter and enjoy the surf whilst basing yourself on the road. Nice immaculate late 60’s Bonnie too.

Fiat 500

Headroom – one thing that can be said about motorcycles is they have ample headroom. Here is Enzo (Jean Reno) and his sidekick Roberto who goes up against his free diving competition Jaques Mayol (Jean Marc Barr) in the extraordinary Luc Besson film The Big Blue. The small Fiat acts as transport along the azure horizon Mediterranean.

Clearing a Cough

Gertie the GTI was blowing an exhaust connection so I had a back alley shop lift her up and weld a new sleeve on. Her tune is bright and clear now.

Bandits at 3 o’clock

Fun on Three Wheels – as I was wandering the motorcycle show this vehicle trundled up. A couple with big grins where sat as pilot and navigator. Gleaming v-twin engine afront, grey fuselage, and amaranth wire wheels with knock-off hubs. As British as tea & scones with a whiff of a WW1 ace heading into the French skies to see off Hun. “Smoke me a kipper I’ll be back for breakfast!”

The Mighty Mini

Race Day. Pack the car we’re off to the track. Well if your car is a classic mini you’d better make sure your Moto is a lightweight one: here they’re toting a Triumph Cub in the boot door. As needs demand!

Did I ever tell you I passed my driving test in a Mini?

My other car is a Tractor

The Great Jim Clark would have been 80 today. Borders farmer from Chirnside he went on to become one of the most likable and naturally talented driver behind the wheel of any car. Sadly we lost him in ’68 at the Hockenheimring track in Germany.

Just look at those dapper driving brogues.

Ranger

We’ve seen this truck before… It’s rescued a couple or three breakdowns on the Bonnie in years past. The white Ford Ranger owned by Dean Rennie. It’s been up on chocks for a couple of months while the brake lines were getting replaced. Today I gave Dean a hand at dropping the truck bed back on. A solid little work horse.

Though discontinued in the US in 2011 there arewhisperings from Detroit to bring back this mid-sized truck platform .

Zero to Sixty in THREE WEEKS

Solihull January 29 2016. The last Land Rover Defender rolled off the assembly line after 67 years of continuous production. The US have their Jeep and the British the ‘Landy’. Earlier Series’ models and latter day Defender utility vehicles have been used on farm and battlefield both. Slow, basic, rattly and draughty; it was a basic tool. I remember smaller grouped field trips sat in the rear bench seats of the LWB 12 seater.

Any color as long as it’s green with a cream roof… Desert or jungle expedition anyone?

Kids these days!

ABC7 news-

Benjamin and Elizabeth Neufeld’s car somehow ended up on its side on Linda Flora Drive as they were turning into the driveway of their Bel Air home on Friday. Benjamin Neufeld, 87, was able to climb out, but his 85-year-old wife, who was driving, was trapped inside the Honda.

“It didn’t skid, it didn’t slide, it didn’t bounce, it just fell over,” Ben said.

While neighbors and witnesses rushed to help, the Neufelds posed for pictures.
“So I’m sending her pictures while she’s trapped in this car, and Ben is right outside the car just kind of going, ‘Hey, you OK in there?,'” photographer and neighbor Cara Steinberg said.
Elizabeth Neufeld even asked for her purse so she could take a selfie while still in the car.
Fortunately, the couple wasn’t hurt during the accident. They have been married for more than 60 years.
Old man Ben’s trousers declined to say anything… They were quite embarrassed by the entire proceedings.

Got Glue?

As had been mentioned before when I was growing up I loved to build model kits. Aircraft, tanks, spaceships, the odd car; but I never got around to motorcycles. Well did I miss out! I could’ve had fun with kits such as this Revell treat. A 1/8 scale Triumph Tiger.

The full page advert for their particular lines is a period piece from the mid-sixties. Even Ed Roth hot rods are featured. “Wot is… Is.. Wot. ain’t…. Ain’t!!!”
