Cola in the Shade

Heartland – like some photojournalist capture from days past here sits a laden Triumph Thunderbird under a Central American sun as the owner takes respite in the shade of a roadside shack near Tamaulipas. The rider is Chicagoan Michael James, who, like some latter day Che Guevara & Alberto Granado went out to find the world; though this was in 1962 only 11 years after comrade Che’s epic travels. James went on to open the Heartland Cafe which still serves food about five blocks from us here.

“I’m working hard to keep the Triumph on the road through the flat, arid, brown, dry and desolate terrain. Its new, different, and I’m digging it, taking it all in.”

Wattle & Daub

Thatched – perfect English scene of a pair of couples heading out for a jaunt along some country lanes in the Home Counties. Stopping off for a pint at The Bull Inn, the local pub at Arborfield in Berkshire where this photo was taken.

Red, White & Blue

Ready Salted – glorious Triumph TRW sidevalve twin parked under what looks like the clear blue skies of Utah. The Bert Hopwood designed engine was put to practical use in the British forces during the very latter parts of and after WW2. None were sold publicly so all are ex-service. This well worn example appears to be utilized for speed work on The Flats.

Spiritual Speed

Gallipoli Galloper – beautiful period photograph from a century ago of the Reverend Cecil Howard Edwards who served as the army chaplain for the ANZAC troops. I’m sure he experienced the worst of humanity in the Dardanelles. His model of transport is a Triumph Model H 500cc to get around Southern Queensland.

Water & Tire

Off Road – stunning action photo of a Triumph Scrambler haring through a wet field or beach. Evocative in black & white with the headlight echoing the white helmet. Narrow depth of field achieves immediacy.

60’s summertime

Winter Blues? Then Ride Red! Whether it’s a midget proportioned Cub, perfect for two-up gals, or a bath tubbed Speed Twin. He looks like a G-Man on some Agency field mission, the ladies are off on a jaunt on the highways.

Between the Waves

The Atlantic Ocean Road – the sinuous stretch of County Road 64 that leaps from craggy isle to cove to hamlet in Eide and Averøy in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Like the annum ahead it meanders serpentine to a destination on the horizon.

Annual Goals

NYR – New Year’s Resolutions: the time of year when you need to take stock and wistfully ponder on what the heck you got up to and wonder what bedevilment you can get up to in the ensuing year. Here’s mine: project; new bike; travel; go places with my lass.

金曜日 (Friday)

Tickler – every classic bike owner knows this procedure: petrol tap open; push in the carburetor tickler to enrich the bowls and fuelling; whiff of throttle; then a healthy hoof of the kick-starter. Here’s a gauntlet donned rider of the fairer sex carrying out such a start-up. Nice Photo from a Japanese rocker outfit.

Fifty Years Ago…

Boxing Day – what a wonderful image this is. Low Canadian sun lighting up a frozen roadway with a hardy soul taking his svelte Triumph Tiger Cub out for an icy spin. Heavy mitts keep the digits warm, but an open face helmet will cause some frost nip to the nose…

One Way to Notting ‘ill please

Bayswater Road Santy – smashing image of mini-bike zooming Santa Claus haring through London with sidecar bear. Fake cotton wool beard is holding up well to the foggy atmosphere. The red bus and fringed coat would have made this a perfect seasonal image in colour.

Ho Ho Ho

Good ol’ Saint Nick – combination reindeer hack. What better way to get around on Christmas Even than a spotless Triumph Thunderbird ‘Bathtub’. The cars registration OV denote a Birmingham location, the bikes NX reg. pinpoint Dudley.

A Bridge Too Far

Sixty Eight – a pair of freshly minted Bonneville’s with their owners under the delicately suspended span of the Mount Hope Bridge between Bristol & Portsmouth on Rhode Island across Narragansett Bay. Engineering marvel is a backdrop to a motorcycle marvel. The bridge opened in 1929 a decade or so before Ed Turners development of the parallel twin engined machines that would culminate in the classic 60’s Bonnie’s.

Winter is Here

Snow Days – the first white blankets of winter arrived over the weekend; perhaps I can use this ski tow as an exciting escape for seasonal fun! I’m sure the tires are spiked too!

Rover

Dog Rider – this is Douglas and his owner Andrew Ditton. They live the simple life in an Airstream trailer. They get around on a silver Triumph Bonneville. Not bad.
