From another point of view…

Noodling around on the Interweb yesterday I came across someone’s photos taken at the recent vintage motorcycle show. He had a photo of my Bonnie amongst his images; so it was quite refreshing to see it through someone else’s eyes. A familiar thing from a fresh perspective can help you see the everyday world differently. Photo by Martin Cimek who also illustrates all of the Steel Toe Press banners and poster.

He’s done all of the artwork for a decades worth of Mods vs. Rocker and Motoblot combined. I love the old time comic book ink & brush style with splashes of color and deep shadow.

Sunny Smiles

Perfect, perfect, perfect. Saturday morning ride in wonderful conditions. Cool shade and warm sun. Bike running well and traffic very light. The wee ravines along the north shore offered some enjoyable moderate sweeping curves. It fuels the mind, body and soul. August days…

“you know nothing Jon Snow!”

Apart from what a good motorcycle is… Looking countrified for a GQ cover here’s actor Kit Harington with a black Bonnie ready to take on The Great North Road.

Ready to take on the White Walkers..

Red Leather

Hot day today. Low nineties. Out and about and saw this dude. He’s decided to keep cool on his mighty ruby slipper red hog: breeze across his shoulders sure must feel good. Well if ye dinnae want te wear a leather jacket in the midday sun…. Just grow yer own! Those wee moc loafers suit his attire too…

Wheels Real

Putting plans into action for the next Bonnie upgrade. The standard steel rims add a lot of unsparing weight to the bike and as was done in ‘the day’ I’m going to get hold of some hubs and lace ’em to alloy rims then shod the new lighter wheel with modern rubber.

Dog Days of Summer

Hot, hot day here in the Midwest. A short ride to try a blow a waft of cool air across the back. The odd spot along the lagoons and one or two sections where Lake Michigan touches the leafy ravines offered respite.

Doff

A Motoblot image just cropped up. Taken as my comrade on wheels Dean and I arrive to the recent street-fest event in Chicago. His spit clean ’68 looking sparking next to my rough 72’etc Orange Bonnie. I’m removing my yellow hornéd Davida lid as we line up in the British section.

Orange is the New Bike

Italian Triple. “Il Bruto” the mighty Jota in glistening orange. It had a radioactive glow in the midday sun.

Cleveland Cycle Works little quarter liter custom scrambler. U.S. Built small Moto with sweet styling suitable for city flitting. It’s like a new version of my Cub…. We’ll write about CCW another time.

Board tracker blitz: twenties Titan for zooming the banked oval. The pure engineering on these things is as brave as the riders who piloted them.

Muscle Magic! Not a bike but by ‘eck it’s a steroid built machine for rippling the Tarmac and busting licenses. It has a 440 7.8l V8 Magnum engine that took the Hemi-Orange monster to Dodges swan song in the 60’s through 70’s muscle car spacerace.

Cafe’d Cub

So cool it’s as chilly as a draft whipping down from Up North. Spindly sinewy muscle ready for a lightweight rip along the B roads on a June afternoon.

Tracks in the Sand

We’ve all heard about the fable “Footprints in the sand”. An allegory reflecting on the journey of life with guidance for the twists and turns thrust in our way. Well here’s the Fathers Day version… Yes I know it was Papas Day yesterday but I need to get this on the blog before I forget it.

Looking back on life you see wheeled tracks of your  life’s travels in the sands of time. Early on there are a pair of them. Those double lines weaving in and out denote when your father rode with you; sometimes showing you the way ahead, other times guiding you along and further sections watching over as you speed ahead across fresh sand. Teacher, Mentor, Guide. Later on there is a single tire track weaving along representing the adventures of your own experiences as they travel across ripples, over dunes, through surf; marked by knobby fresh tires at some stretches and worn down ‘boots’ at others. You ask where he went? Well he’s earned his keep on the rugged shores and is traveling parallel to the beach on the smoother roads of life driving his Jaguar saying, “I told you everything you need; now you’ve just got to get on with the job! I’ll meet you for a fish & chip supper at the cafe up ahead!”

The Longest Day

Warm weather with fluffy clouds across a hazy blue sky. It would have been rude not to roll out The Bonnie and take her for a gentle cruise up north. An odd waft of cool air drifted from the Lake gave comfort to the slightly muggy atmosphere. My leather jacket had all vents open and the front zipper down somewhat. Nevertheless the feathers were ruffled and the ride enjoyed.

Nailed!

Was going to have a quick spin yesterday after a project dedication but a noticeable flabby rear tire stymied that. Shame, the weather was  lovely just. So today I’m sorting the inner tube out with a bit of old fashioned rubber cement and vulcanized patching. Never my favorite thing…

At least I’m not stranded on a country lane with s flat tire!

Oh yes; due to a long tiring day yesterday this post is for June 6th.

Dune

“The mystery of life isn’t a problem to solve, but a reality to experience.”

Frank Herbert

One of the greatest scifi books with far reaching topics of politics, religion, economy, ecology, and eugenics, its setting millennia in the future could be read as a shadow of the world today. Dune was published fifty years ago and is as fresh today as it was in the sixties when the environmental movement was in its infancy.

Triumph Feeds the Soul

Fabulous day in the saddle taking the Bonnie’s around to Michigan. An early start saw a quiet Riute 12 with naught but the shadows playing across the road ahead.

This quicksilver toned Porsche Spyder stopped us in our tracks.  A race-spec engine growled as the owner sped off from the seasonal grocery store it was parked near.

Also included in the ride was a short drop.-in to the amiable Bob Goodpaster at Expert Motorcycle Works in Hobart Indiana. A glorious  racing  650cc Norton sat in the front showroom floor. A serious track iron that sees  unobstructed chequered flags across the country at vintage racing meets.

Up against the wall

Got the bike ready for a sunny jaunt tomorrow into Michigan. Memorial Day weekend ahead and the morn is meant to be a sunny day. On the road by 7 so the highway will be lightly trafficked. I’ve put in new clutch springs and set screws to tighten up the plates.
