Route 12

West Dunes Highway – one of the best stretches of the weekends trip is a section through the wooded back dune. The canopies arch overhead and there’s just enough bend in the road to keep your swooping motion fun.

South Shore

Coaling Tower – the ride today took us along Route 12 into Michigan. It runs parallel to various rail lines including the South Shore. This structure stands just outside of Michigan City and was used to refuel steam locomotives.

Calumet River span – another distinctive structure was the raised bridge over the Calumet. Great engineering. This was in its up position for maintenance. The detour took us over the 95th St Bridge; another bascule structure, which was used to dramatic effect in the Blues Brothers car chase.

On Reflection…

Window Shopping – I went to the Norton Owners of Chicago’s Vintage Motorcycle Show earlier today. It was held in the parking lot at MCC in Villa Park – Triumph, Ducati & KTM dealer. The blog posts next week will cover the exhibited offerings; but in the meanwhile I had a gander at the newer motorcycles neatly lined up in the showroom. This is a T120R Bonneville..  quite splendid.

Red is the Tank

Cherry Pie – a year ago today we were enjoying Michigans best cherry pies in Beulah up near the  Lelanau Peninsula. Well, this fine example of a pre-unit Triumph sure is a tasty treat wrapped in pastry, a la mode.

HB Pencil

Grid – a quick doodle of the Triumph twin engine. I was waiting for the fish to cook, so took the 10 minutes to do this scrappy sketch on graph paper.

A Right Pair

’69 & ’72 – the two Bonnie’s looked good at The Lake Cafe in Antioch yesterday. For a nearly combined age of a hundred years they’re holding their own on the highways.

John Pemberton’s Beverage

It’s the Real Thing! Not quite a Hilltop of anticipated world peace, or a Pacific sunrise revelation by Don Draper, but smashing weather conditions for a cracking ride deserved an ice cold Coke. Proper stuff with real sugar, glass bottle, straw… Perfect!

Woosh

Summer souls – the forecast is anticipated to be perfect this weekend. I’m sure a venture out on the Bonnie will be in the works. This lass needs her legs and arms covered up; as well as a lid on her head.

Purple Tank

Photo Finish – absolute realism is created in this ultra detailed painting from the superlative hand of James Hollingsworth. https://www.neilhollingsworth.com/

Look at his other works of ordinary objects and wartime aircraft. The light on them is perfect.

Moo

Cowmark Cafe – another stop-off on the weekend jaunt was this roadside diner. Good cooked breakfast and coffee. Adorned in the black and white Fresian cattle it was a worthy theme for dairyland Wisconsin.

The Transporter

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head! Through the dappled shade of a dreamy scene Brit actionman Jason Statham, who turns fifty today, enjoys a blue Bonneville blast with a blonde beauty.

Hoofer

Wet Roads – tried to get a short ride in this morning but unforecast rains dampened procedings. So we had a coffee at Bob’s Pantry in Braeside. The new blacktop roads aren’t too goo in wet weather – not like the grippy UK roads which are constructed and surfaced for the more common damp conditions. Nevertheless a good chat over a cuppa is good too. Here Dean kicks over his Bonnie.

Kickstarter

Weekend Kicks – hope this lass puts her weight into it. Those sixties Bonnie’s need a hefty hoof to turn the engine over. But with practiced technique and deft aplomb it’ll fire up. Nice photo.

Three for Thee

Six Cylinders Three point Six liters- a bevy of Triumphs big parallel twins were spied at the show yesterday. Each 1200cc has its own particular character: from the bespoke Bobber, the sophisticated Bonneville and the speed fed Thruxton. I still think that solver grey faired Thruxton looks the best.

One looks this way and one looks the other

By a Nose – Geordie gives approval to a café’d Triumph on one of our walks.
