The White Helmet Display Team – Royal Signal Corps

These guys are another early memory of motorcycling. They would ride around arenas across the country, as well as at the Royal Tournament, in perfect syncronized fashion, either piled up on one bike, or through flaming hoops, or on one great feat, ride towards each other in a X-shape just missing each other by fractions of an inch. Bike skills and control are superb. They are a volunteer team within the Signallers and are one of the oldest motorcycle display teams in the world. 80 years.

Their bike of choice: a 750 Triumph, with loud TT pipes, knobbly tires and a red flash’d tank to match their pistripe trousers. More tuned to their machines against the modern street stunt riders who rely on wheelies, burnouts and stoppies.

The classic flaming jump.

The Pyramid

Juggling backwards.

Sidesaddle standing with no hands, cool control.

9 guys as well as the rider on one bike.

Atop a ladder and riding around.
Two wheeled gymnastics.

Triumph Scrambler Video

Here’s a great short video to get the blood flowing! A customized Scrambler taken through its paces in a derelict urban setting; great stuff!

A Fast Triumph at Bonneville ~ Gotta love the color!

Taking a bike up to speed on the Salt Flats must be exciting; that bike being a Triumph must be exhilarating! Here’s a team from Madison WI who have a blown 650 engine from a ’66 TR6 ‘horned into a stretched drag frame, set up to hare along the black line between the mile markers.

Von Dutch tank on a 70’s Bonnie

Here’s a beautiful lightly custom Triumph, bobbed and given a nice monochromatic appearance centered on a tank painted and pinstriped by the hand of Von Dutch (a.k.a. Kenny Howard); motorcycle and hotrod custom painter and pinstriper extraordinaire from the sixties. This bike sold recently at an auction of Bud Ekins items by Bonhams.

Bud Ekins 1930-2007

Triumph motorcycles in the sixties can’t be discussed without mentioning Bud Ekins; one time owner of a Triumph dealership in California, desert racer and Syeve McQueen stand in (“The Jump” on The Great Escape) he appears to have an old school coolness when atop his bikes. He ran the ISDN (International Six Days Trial) winning a gold medal 4 times and silver once, no mean feat.

Logos and branding

The use of the Triumph logo with another marque, somewhat like the bike in the previous post. Let the good times roll!  Now the converse could be achieved with Triumph represented with the Helvetica of the Kawasaki logo…

Some Triumph specific locations in and near Chicago

First off a couple of dealers where the new Triumph motorcycle range can be found. Note to self: “must go for a test ride of the new Bonneville…”. Looking at reviews on http://www.yelp.com/ they both have 5 star ratings for both customer care s well as maintenance. A good motorcycle mechanic you get on with is worth his weight in old british iron!
Here’s a place which specialises in vintage bikes, British as well as other European marques such as BMW. Again good review results so worth a try when looking for expertise in the realm of old motorcycles.
Finally Morries Place in RIngwood, Illinois. A wee bit of a hike to northern Lake Co. but well worth it. Both for Ed Zenders immeasurable knowledge on Brit Iron as well as his display of Triumphs, Nortons, BSA’s and all. He worked on my bikes engine and I trust him with all vintage mechanical work.
Eye Candy for sure…

Racing Bonneville

My next vision for the Triumph is to give it the sleek lines of a cafe racer; clip-on bars, rearsets and a windy country lane. Here are a couple of bikes with the low slung look for inspiration.

Robert Craig Knievel aka Evel Knievel

Motorcycle showman extaordinaire ~ Evel dominated the stunt world of riding through several decades, fans eagerly waiting for him to jump cars, buses, fountains, and the Snake Canyon. With star spangled cape flying, there always seemed to be some sort of spill on the landing ramp, stretcher borne exit and shaky ‘thumbs up’ from the rider who, I’m sure, introduced many a boy to the daredevil world of motorcycling. Where does Triumph come in? Well one of his most famous jumps was over the fountain at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas NV. He rode a Bonneville 650.

Triumph even commemorated the 40th anniversay of the stunt with a special: a sweet looking version of their Scrambler model. High pipes, shortened mudguards and I’m sure a ripping twin sound.

Here’s one of the original 650’s on display.
Another on a workstand…

Now, any boy growing up in the mid-seventies yearned for the popular Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle. I had the chopper. Rev up the ‘energizer’ and watch him go. Ramps were set up in schoolyards, across back lawns and along the streets. My figure of Evel suffered a fractured ankle: a piece of the wire armature poked through the thick rubber skin. Much like the real guy!

Advertising with comic strip type graphics lured the Marvel, DC, 2000AD crowd…

Smaller die-cast bikes also apeared; raced alongside my Britains bikes. These modelled after Harley Davidsons, his latter s’steeds’. Now, honestly if you were going to jump over things would you want a lump of iron like a Harley under you?

There was even a toy marketed soley for girls, Derry Daring with pink jumpsuit, long blonde hair and matching stunt cycle and energizer: classic stuff…. sadly this didn’t make it over to the UK. I wonder how many girls were inspired to ride?

Circumnavigation of the World on a Triumph Sportsbike ~ Barmy

Another journey around the world undertaken was in 1998 by Nick Sanders, professional long distance biker extraordinare, who rode a world record 19,930-mile in a record riding time of 31 days 20 hours. He has since repeated this feat in faster time on a Yamaha R-1. The post ride look is priceless… absolutely knackered and pleased it’s over.
You can catch up with his latest shenanigans at http://www.nicksanders.com/

Cover of ’65 Triumph range brochure

Fun artwork for the cover of the mid sixties Triumph motorcycle range brochure. Makes you want to take a ride down to a cafe and sit under a shade sipping an aromatic cappiccino watching passers by admire your ride…

2009 Triumph Bonneville T100 Special Edition

In 2009 Triumph celebrated its 50th anniversary of the Bonneville with a limited edition in the classic tangering dream color scheme. Very close to my Porsche Gulf colours! It looks fabulous and I’m sure would ride great and sure to be a head turner…. now if only I could win the pools!

Autumn Rides

I took the bike out both days this weekend; one trip heading north through the winding roads lined with fall colored trees, the otehr south along the lakefront upon the gentle rollercoaster that is Lake Shore Drive. Perfect weather…

Around the World on a Triumph

One inspirational story is of Ted Simon, who, in 1974 aged 43, ventured on a four year journey around the world covering 64,000 miles through 45 countries on a 500cc Triumph Tiger. A truly impressive feat that was undoubtedly life changing. The book “Jupiters Travels” recounts his adventures and the people he met on his journey.

Two decades later, aged 70, he then retraced his route, this time on a BMW, to see how the world had changed. Truly Impressive.
