Ton-Up

End of the work week: get the bike oot! Don the well worn, supple leathers, rip the iron along the North Circular, pick the other lads up and head doon the chippy after a few ton laps.

  1. David,
Great photo.. jogs a lot of memories.
This looks.. early 60’s, south[ern ?] England to me. The crap bikes are SO familiar.. and someone, as here, in full uniform, always had a bloody awful AMC heavy single or.. Gawd help us.. the 2 stroke twin with mental clipons.. bet he had standard foot-pegs too.!
    So NOT cafe racer.
I remember nice bikes turning up, someone had a full Dunstall Dominator.. they were like jewels amongst the crud.
What says S. England is.. the [ gay ! ]caps some lads are wearing.. the sort you see at sailing clubs. Far too “nancy” for northern boys.. in all all the years I was around the northern scene.. I have no recollection of ever seeing them.
Although, I went to see [and on stage with !] Jerry Lee Lewis in Manchester, at a tv studio for a recording to go out on national tv. That was mid 60’s.. can’t remember exactly when.. [ nearly 50 years ago. Ouch !] Things is, there were quite a few caps about that day, mostly on top of scouse heads as I recall. No surprise there then.. eh ?
Do hope you are well. Weather here today [9.30 am] is delightful.. very bright after frost and the promise of a lovely day to come.
And.. the 6 Nations Rugby starts today ! England Vs Scotland.. now we’ll go and stuff the frock-wearers.. Independence indeed !
    Regards
    Bill

    • Thanks for your recollection of times gone by. I though these lot looked like ‘not your typical’ TonUp lads; they’re fresh faced, with an air of pretension (is that the right word?). I see bikers as a bit more gritty, oily, weatherbeaten – so to speak. There is a local cafe scene here in Chicago; but I’m leery of it, seems to be the crowd of latterday wannabes rather than honest riders who love their bikes, the road and a good cup of tea from a transport caff… I wonder what Jerry Lee Lewis thought of Manchester?
Winters cloak is in full wrap here – below zero temps (farenheit!) Keep you inside – still working on my front brakes – trying to get new bearings – hopefully she’ll be up and running for spring! Snow here today, about 3-4″ not too bad. I’d like to look for an empty parking lot and do icy donuts in the car: good practice for control in slippery conditions; as well a good fun!

      Gan Canny wor pal!
