Promotion shot for the new electric start T140…
F1 seventies playboy racer James Hunt sits pillion to singer David Essex on a 1980 Triumph Bonneville 750. That year Essex starred in the motorcycle racing film Silver Dream Racer; and the soundtrack song “Silver Dream Machine” was a Top 3 hit in the UK Singles Chart. Being a keen motorcyclist, he waived his fee for the then-new 1980 electric start Triumph Bonneville he had contracted to advertise on behalf of the struggling Triumph motorcycle workers’ co-operative. He still owns that motorcycle.
It didn’t fare too well at the theaters with a 5.3/10 on IMDB. But fun was had my all during filming.
Here he is with Suzuki maestro Barry Sheene, also pal of James Hunt: I bet there was partying which included rock & roll back in those days!

Mad Max: it’s a roller coaster, dirt slinging, machine grinding, apocalyptic, hell-on-wheels, adrenaline flooding, truck chasing, bullet flying, hot rod blasting, rock ‘n’ rolling, gasoline burning, chick brawling, dystopian steering, heck of a story, Fury Road movie. It doesn’t stop, there are no brakes on this film. Damn good, damn!

A latter-day Bonneville advert utilizes a time-worn approach for marketing to men: a young scantily clad lass draped over the latest and greatest. Well it ain’t new and is practically identical with the timeless Norton spreads of yesteryear.
Actually, growing up the black Norton commando was my favorite bike. A perfect looking machine; indeed Uncomplicated Sophistication…
We just need the great Leonard Rossitter in his slimy lounge character to sidle in.

Han Solo captain of the Millennium Falcon; could be taking to the cosmos again soon with his sidekick Chewbacca the wookie. Here he is under Californian sun on a 90’s period Daytona. Chunky motorcycle for the iconic action hero.
..who has been Indiana Jones in other capers; and Sean Connery was his pop. Here the two archaeology professors ride combination style. Sean isn’t quite as whiskered as Chewie!

Goon, poet, artillery signaller, Irish. That’s Spike Milligan who would be 98 today. His off kilter buffoonery was fresh air in a world of stale comedy.
Say Bazonka every day
That’s what my grandma used to say
It keeps at bay the Asian Flu’
And both your elbows free from glue.
So say Bazonka every day
(That’s what my grandma used to say)
Don’t say it if your socks are dry!
Or when the sun is in your eye!
Never say it in the dark
(The word you see emits a spark)
Only say it in the day
(That’s what my grandma used to say)
Young Tiny Tim took her advice
He said it once, he said it twice
he said it till the day he died
And even after that he tried
To say Bazonka! every day
Just like my grandma used to say.
Now folks around declare it’s true
That every night at half past two
If you’ll stand upon your head
And shout Bazonka! from your bed
You’ll hear the word as clear as day
Just like my grandma used to say!
He sits on a Wooler motorcycle. Some publicity shot from the Veteran & Vintage magazine in 1968.

A Steptoe like character trundling the damp streets of some English town in search of unwanted items that may turn into a groat or two. Flat cap, fag in mouth, trusty Model H Triumph pulling the basket and bag laden cart. It reminds me of the classic BBC comedy starring Wilfred Brambell and Harry H Corbett as father Albert & son ‘arold respectively.
“You dirty old Man!”

The darkest of cult movies of the new millennium. Donnie Darko. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the dour teen seeking an answer to his future premonitions. In a couple of scenes he’s seen wearing a gray sweatshirt with neon pink Triumph logo. The rabbit is Frank.

Donnie Darko:Why are you wearing that stupid bunny suit?
Frank:Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Our four legged furry pup from yesterdays posting leads us on to this pair of Hairy Bikers. It’s Si King and David Meyers. They present a cookbook show in the vein of Keith Floyd meets The Two Fat Ladies. Traveling the length and breadth of the British Isles in search of food delights of blighty. The two bikes here are immaculate stunners: Si is on an early Pre-Unit Bonnie and David a BSA Rocket Gold Star.

Other motos used include these mike munching Triumph Rocket 3. 2.3 liter heavyweight. John O’Groats is a short spin away.

Actor Chris Pratt, also known as Andy Dwyer in Parks & Recreation, is the new lead in the latest Jurassic Park films. With some lizard chasing through lush jungle he utilizes a Triumph Scrambler to keep apace with the velociraptors.
Andy: “There’s an old saying in show business: The show must go wrong. Everything always goes wrong, and you just have to deal with it.”

When Eric von Zipper adore someone, they stay adored! So was the tenet of cheesy biker chief of the Ratz gang on the klutzy Beach movies of the sixties. As well as Frankie Avalon crooning to a spunky Annette Funicello; there were deadhead surfer dudes, scanty gals dancing on the SoCal sands, and Paul Lynde pitching in with his campy nasal quips.

Harvey Lembeck played our chain swinging leather clad biker. Sometimes seen squirreling around on a Triumph. Others a Honda.

And so goes the salutation of the great Spock. Today saw the passing of Leonard Nimoy at the age of 83. Photo is his Mission Impossible character Paris looking logically cool.

Watching an old TV show from the early eighties. Starring Tom Selleck as the titular private investigator turned Hawaiian gallavanter for thriller writer Robin Masters (voiced by Orson Welles). He gets to blast around in his employers Ferrari 308 GTS. It is the classic mid engined sports car in red.

Progressive Insurance have a strong ongoing advertisement with their character Flo. Since 2008. She assures insurance premiums are competitive with other companies. Here are a couple of frames from a particular TV spot where motorcycle insurance is promoted. She pulls up to a stop sign next to a Ducati.

Her moto is a pearly white Triumph Daytona. Which matches her usual white outfit.

The quirky, chipper sales clerk, typically seen wearing a white apron and blue Chuck Taylor’s, is portrayed by comedienne Stephanie Courtney.

Watching an older episode of the Yorkshire police show Dalziel & Pascoe one of the characters, who also works down what must be one of the last pits, rides a late 90’s Triumph T595 Daytona. He’s a main suspect so being a stereotypical rowdy biker maintains suspense.

He wheelies along colliery row houses and near allotment gardens.

Grumpy Dalziel (PR. Dall eel ) is played by the late Warren Clark. Starting his career as Dim in A Clockwork Orange.

“There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.”
