The Driver – today is primo stunt driver Bill Hickman’s Birthday. Born in 1921 he is most known as the assassins getaway driver in Bullitt. Driving a ’68 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum R/T through the streets of San Francisco whilst being chased by Steve McQueen in his Highland Green ’68 Ford Mustang 390 GT . Here is Bill keeping an eye in the rearview mirror for Frank Bullitt. Considered one of the greatest car chases in moviedom it could never be achieved in this day and age as modern action scenes are created with unreal CGI tomfoolery. The second greatest chase is in William Friedkin’s 1971 The French Connection which was also helmed by Hickman.
Hickman was friend and driving master to James Dean. Being was first on the scene to Deans fateful crash in his 550 Spyder, and sadly the one who was at his side when he died.

Undercover Hero – “Soft Beds, Hard Battles” a little known Peter Sellers movie from 1974. He takes on several roles, including a very convincing Hitler, but the main character is Major Robinson who, due to his BSA M20 WD breaking down, ends up as an an Intelligence officer in a Paris brothel. Thank Zarquon for his last film “Being There”.

Inspector Clouseau – Britt Ekland sits pillion whilst Peter Sellers takes the captains saddle on this classy Moto Guzzi V700. It may have been whilst they were filming the joint British/Italian film “After the Fox”. The best bit in that film is a restaurant scene where Maria Grazia Buccella plays the beautiful Miss Okra.

Lords & Ladies – I was kindly informed that yesterday’s post were society photographer Patrick Anson, also known as Lord Lichfield, and Swedish actress, and ex-wife of Peter Sellers, Britt Ekland. Being in the thick of the swinging sixties he was always surrounded by beautiful women. A better view of that Honda.

Hipster – with my recovery from hip surgery going splendidly I am now swinging around on a pair of crutches. Luckily being in the clutches on winter here in the Midwest my riding is otherwise thwarted. Hopefully I’m back to full leg strength by springtime so I don’t have to scoot around like our chopper chap here…

NVT – as the motorcycle industry’s last gasping breaths rattled across 70’s Britain the offerings from the combined Norton Villiers Triumph were what held the meager company together. Commando’s, Trident, & John Player Racer. Classic stuff. Powerstuff!

Beefy Bonnie – classy rear-end view of a 70’s Triumph. A magazine advert promoting the good price of this five speed model which at £501.93 or you could get the doughty Tiger for £459.56. For reference the weekly wage was £40 a week, a loaf of bread 10p, a pint? 25p.

Sweeping Lines – The Bonnie will be getting the low bars put back on for the coming riding season; the upright ones are a bit ‘tall’ for my comfort. So to maintain the cafe appearance I’ve been delving into the interweb’s selection of road racers prepared using the T120 as a basis. One item is the use of swept-back downpipes: they’re a nice touch for speedier proceedings.

Ascent – a motor needs a means to move. The Triumph Trident T160 is a pretty decent example of the whole is greater than the sum of parts. It reminds me of welsh actor Stanley Baker; a solid and memorable performance.
Lieutenant John Chard : Do you think the Welsh can’t do better than that, Owen?
Pte. Owen : Well, they’ve got a very good bass section, mind, but no top tenors, that’s for sure.

Tres Leches – the cream of the crop that milked the british motorcycle industry’s technology to the limit of the day. The 750cc triple cylindered motor used in the BSA A75, & Triumph T-150 & T-160. Certainly looking the part with a bank of Amal carburetors;nicely finned barrels & Head; and a useful kickstarter.

Use your Loaf – here is what I would call a “nippin’ clean” example of a Triumph Trident. Immaculate from head to toe with what I believe is a well proportioned look complete with the idiosyncratic “bread bin” tank.
Historical note: the first commercially produced sliced bread was July 7th 1928.
